What to do if you are harassed by RJM Acquisitions
Date: Tue, 07/10/2007 - 19:10
But i found one surprise. On my Transunion report, i found a debt for $77 from RJM Acquisitions. it doesnt say what it's for and it was opened on 10/05. I did some research and I found that they are junk debt buyer but i have no other debt. Some people who have this placed on there credit report have been members of book clubs. i was a member of a book club and didnt pay for a book but that was 10 years ago when i was in high school and I never gave them my social security number!
According to what ive read there's no number to contact them and they never respond to letters. i know i should dispute it with transunion but i've also read that it doesnt take much for a CA to validate it, all they have to do is reply back yes.
I'm not sure what i should do, any help would be greatly appreciated.

Dispute it anyway with the credit bureau. I had a BoA account that was showing as a charge-off, and when I checked my credit report later, I discovered that RJM Acquistions had placed the same account as a collection item. I disputed it because they were reporting the same item as negative, and you can't have the same account reported twice as a derogatory. So it was removed with no fuss.

You should immediately dispute it with Transunion. Notify the bureau in writing about the negative listing. Provide them the copies of your documents that support your claims. Yes there are many junk debt buyers who report false debts. In this case you can also send a debt validation letter to RJM Acquisitions via certified mail with a return receipt request so you have a proof that they received the letter. If they do not respond to your validation letter within 30 days, then you can write to Transunion that the collector did not validate the debt and request them to delete the negative listing from your report.

I dont have any documents support it because this is the first time i've seen it. If it is anything from the past ,it's past the statute of limitations because i've paid/am paying everything that i've opened in the past 5 years. I only started getting credit cards within these 5 years. so whatever it is,it's false or the bookclub/some random thing.
should i just dispute with transunion and say it's not mine and see what happens?

RJM is a joke. Most of the debts they puchase have SOLs which have run long ago. I believe they are in New York. You should 1)file a complaint with the BBB, 2) dispute with the CRAs, 3) file a complaint with the New York AG as well as the one in your state about RJMs fraudulent actions.

I forgot to mention, follow goodnelly's advice. Everything must be in order if later you might want to sue them. The letter demanding validation of the debt should be done first. if the debt isn't on your CR (from the original creditor), the SOL has probably run. Be aware as well, that RJM is not licensed and/or bonded in many states where it tries to collect.

you should just PAY the 77 dollars. you already admitted that you didn't pay for the item, so what is it going to hurt you to pay the measly amount? Its a heck of a lot cheaper that suing and paying a lawyer.

Guest why would anyone pay a debt more than ten years old that cannot be litigated or reported to a credit bureau!!! If the agency properly validates the debt and the consumer feels a moral obligation to pay it,then maybe they will. You coming on here and implying a person would get sued over a $77 debt is hilarious since sol is an affirmative defense that would kill the lawsuit completely and open collector to a consumer lawsuit for violations of fdcpa.

RJM is using credit reporting as a means of pressuring you into paying on an account that may not be yours. Either way it is far too old to report if 10 years old.
This is a fdcpa violation and you could probably find a lawyer to take the case on a contingency basis. Rather than pay, RJM can then pay you and your lawyer.
That sounds like a great day for everyone.

I don't even know if this is related to that book club,if it isn't it's completely bogus because i know for sure it's not anything else because i am taking responsibility for my all my debts.

Yes it is definitely your moral obligation to pay off the money you owe. But you are not responsible to pay the debt which you do not owe.

No matter what you think this debt is for, you must always validate it. For all you know, this could actually be a simple mixup, or identity theft. Be careful not to assume too much about what this is--they are required by federal law to tell you. If they do not answer a DV letter sent certified mail RRR, then they cannot legally continue trying to collect from you.
And guest, you are seriously smoking something. NEVER simply PAY a debt without actually knowing what that debt is, verifying that it is actually yours, and that the amount is correct. Here's a thought--companies like RJM are not known for their honesty. Let's say, for example, that they tell you the amount owed is $77....so you pay it without validation. THEN, they turn around and say "we made a mistake, the debt is really $931...."
While that is illegal, getting you to make a payment DOES restart the SOL, doesnt it? BE CAREFUL--dont let the CA's get out of their legal obligations. If this is in fact legally your debt, then do pay it, but not until after they have proven it is yours.

Is there a "date of last activity" on the letter your son recieved? Form letters that RJM have been mailing recently have a date on them. Some as far back as the early 1990s. They're counting on people not to know about such things as the SOL, make some payment, and bring it back within the SOL. By the way, if someone "took advantage" of their kind "discounts", later they'd probably come after the full amount anyway.
As I've stated before, RJM is unlicensed and/or unbonded in many states in which it is trying to collect.

Thank you! I won't be making anymore payments to this company for something that has already been taken care of years ago. Because I did do a credit report for myself and just looked back at it and XYZ company doesn't even show up on my credit report!
How this RJM can do this is beyond me!
I'm glad I got curious about this company by just typing their name in my search engine and this message board link came up.

It's also a FCRA violation. Once it is past the seven year mark where the origional creditor would have had to delete the tradeline, then colleciton accounts related to the OC would also have to delete their tradelines I believe (at least it works that way if the OC reports the tradeline)

I would suggest sending them a debt validation letter (you can find a good template via my signature, also be sure to print and send a copy of the enclosure) send it certified mail, return receipt requested. If it is yours then they may be able to provide you with some documentation. If you need any further assistance please feel free to ask.

Guest (15 year old got books):
Send them a DV, they would have to send you all relevant documentation on this account. I am not fully sure, but unless your mom or day signed the club offer, you can't be held responsible since you were a minor and did not have parental permission to get those books. I am not 100% certain of that, but I had the same situation in which my 16 year old ordered something. I sent the stuff back and got slapped with a 'early cancelation fee' Heh I called and asked them who signed the contract? When they told me, I informed them that they have a contract with a 16 year old girl and not either of her parents. It went away after that.

I had collection from these guys theree times from a book club I never joined. I just paid the first two times. The third time I contacted the littery guild (the book club ), and told them we were not paying for this again. They appologised and said it would be taken care of. Now in 03/08 I find it popping up on my credti report stating the orig. account was in 2005.

Hi. I am new to this board. I received a letter from RJM today stating that I owe $65 for books I never bought through Doubleday Book Club. I never knew I had this account.
I already have a curent account with Doubleday book club and make all payments on time. Doubleday claimed they have sent me notices but I ahve never recieved them and have been at this address for three years now. I have managed to recieved all their other mailings.

rjm inquiries
i have been monitering my report for about a year. reciently i have discovered how to dispute items that are wrong. i was looking at my inquiries statis when i noticed that rjm has did an inquirie at least 6 times in the last 18 months. i can't figure out how to have them removed and im not sure if i can. more importantly how can i keep it from happening again? please help me find out what i need.
RJM inquiries
I just pulled my annual free credit reports and noticed that RJM inquires on my credit every 3 months or so. I paid the extra amount to receive my respective scores and a common theme affecting my scores are the amount of inquiries. Taking into consideration the fact that I hardly ever inquire about credit (the last credit card I applied for was a year ago), it appears to me that RJM is negatively impacting my score by constantly inquiring. The balance they are attempting to collect on is over 10 years old and the balance itself does not appear on my credit report but I would like advce on how to make them stop inquirring.
RJM
I received a letter from RJM a few months ago regarding a closed bank account from over 3 years ago. I closed the account due to a SNAFU within the bank (FYI - Wells Fargo) overdrafted my account and stuck me with a ton of fees. Since then I have not been able to open a checking account.
When I received the initial letter, I was skeptical so I did some research on them and saw what a negative report they had. I wrote them a letter asking for a validation of ownership of the debt.
Well just last week I got a letter back saying they were the legal owners. I dropped a money order in the mail today and it should reach them by the beginning of next week.
Now my question is this -- Is there any documentation that I should request from them to verify that my old account has been taken care of and will let me get a new account opened? Any input on the next steps of this process would be helpful.
My husband found a tag line from RJM on his credit report a week
My husband found a tag line from RJM on his credit report a week ago. He immediately disputed with Transunion, and a mere three hours later received notice from Transunion that the entry by RJM had been removed from his report. We found a letter in the mailbox two days later, from RJM, stating that it was for an account opened by by husband in 1993 (five years before we were married!). They claim that two years ago someone ordered books on the account, that they had shipped and we had received them. The trouble with their tale is that my husband went through Chapter 7 bankruptcy, which was discharged in January 2002, and this book club account was included. Now, from his credit report, he noticed that RJM pulled his report back in October of last year. The bankruptcy is the first item listed on the report. I know it's a long shot, but
could we get these vermin for trying to re-up an account that had been discharged in bk?

A bank account can NOT be purchased, this sounds like a scam to me. Have you ever received a dunning letter (letter of collection) in the mail, if not, next time they call tell them you want a letter of collection before you do anything, and don't admit or deny to owing them until you receive something in the mail and they validate it.

I got a letter in the mail from RJM acquisitions, demanding money that I need to pay from a past Bank account, but the Bank that I was doing business with was stealing money from customers accounts, including mine. I would like to receive my money back, but I don't think it's possible. My letter also has 3 different ways of paying them off, but I don't owe them, instead they owe me.
