Got my first collection call from Bass Litigation
Date: Fri, 08/17/2007 - 13:18
(My payment was due 3 days ago). She then put me on hold for about 10 minutes and came back on the line and said that my "restitution" payment needs to be 722.00 paid today. The loan was for $350. I told her I could pay $100 today. She told me to call my friends and family and see if anyone can loan me money and to call her back in 30 minutes. When I tried to call her back, the number is invalid! And I know I had the correct number because I wrote it down and repeated it back to her. What should I do? She scared the crap out of me and this is only call number one!

Make them aware of the FDCPA laws and ask for the debt to be validated in writing. You will know for sure that they are authorized to collect payments from you. If this is reaching nowhere, you can contact the pdl company directly and make arrangements with them.
Do not pay them a cent! Seriously, do a search here for Bass -

Goudah is right. Be prepared of dealing with the most scam collection company and they never follow the laws. You should be proactive from the first day. Start recording their phone calls for legal use because they will threat you for paying them and this will be violating the federal laws. Check the laws on recording in your state, because in some states you need to have consent of both the parties.

The same lady just called me back and said that if I paid the $100 dollars today then they would work out payment arrangements. She told me to go to a bank of America to deposit the money in their corporate account. She did give the name of the PDL company that she is collecting for, and I do owe them money. Should I go ahead and go deposit this money since at this point they seem to be willing to make payment arrangements?
You still don't know whether they have your account information.
You still don't know whether they have your account information. By paying them $100 and if they don't have your file, your money will go into their pockets and you won't have any proof of your payment. Be careful while dealing with them. They will tempt you to make the payment because they have been doing this with many other people. You are still safe and you should ask for complete documentation before sending them anything.

I did receive an email from "ICollect" stating that this account had been turned over to Bass. I don't know who ICollect is. I just tried to call the pdl company but they are already closed. What should I do????? I want to pay if it is legitimate.

That's the question. You must be sure that Bass has your file. So, ask them to give you the account details in writing. ICollect is another debt collection company.
See the debt validation rule in the FTC website. This will make you more informed about the federal laws and your consumer rights.

Here's one sample debt validation5 letter. Send it to Bass through certified mail and return receipt requested. You will cover your basis legally.

Actually, I believe they call themselves Bass Prelitigation, in an effort to sound like a law firm, which they are not. I wouldn't pay them anything. Indeed, the Florida Attorney General is seeking an injunction against Bass to forbid them doing business, until the case against them is heard.

So should I wait until Monday to see if I can contact the original pdl company to verify if Bass has my account, or should I send Bass a letter asking them to validate my debt? I just don't want to miss an opportunity to make payment arrangements by not paying today like I said I would.

I would do both. As to "restitution" the person mentioned, she has it all wrong. The Florida AG is seeking restitution from Bass to all the people they've terrorized. I'd contact the Florida AG as well if I were you. Bass might end up owing you in the end.

Thank you, I will see what I can find out Monday. Everyone keeps saying on here that you can't be arersted for defaulting on a pdl, I sure hope that's true! I also don't want to be embarrassed at work or have them calling my friends and family, I'm so scared about all this!
