If they signed your return reciept, that should immediately cease communications. Keep a log of all the times and dates they are still calling. Better yet, if they leave messages, save them. You can sue them.

Once the collection agencies receive your Cease and desist letter , they can only contact you once to notify you about their plans - whether they will take a legal action against you or stop all the collection activities. Thats it. They can not keep calling you and harassing you. Law Student is right. Keep a record of all the calls. It will help you, if you are planning to sue them.

Depending on how old the debt is collection agencies are fairly quick to either send the debt back to the creditor or sell it to another agency when they get those letters. Make sure to keep copies of your C&D handy.
