I am a foodie...I love talking about food, reading about food, watching it on TV and of course consuming food. About mid-day I start thinking of what I am going to have for dinner.

So tell us, whats for dinner tonight in your home?


tonight,i shall have my pasta with sausage and garlic toast.only made with lots of lawrys.

In case you did not notice I am green! On Monday everyone else is green. We decided to celebrate St Patrick????????s Day on Sunday , along with Palm Sunday, and Monday. Sunday we are going to do the American version with the corned beef and cabbage and watch Celtic Woman. Corned beef was actually borrowed from the Jewish immigrants by the Irish immigrants as smoked pork was not available in those neighborhoods for boiling!
Monday we are having the above mentioned pork butt with colcannon and soda bread with currants, a more traditional Irish meal. There will be plenty of Guinness and Irish coffee.
Irish Coffee was only invented in 1948 by a bartender named Sheridan in Shannon airport. He was trying to warm up some Swedish tourists grounded by fog. The original recipe is still the best.
Irish Whiskey
Brown Sugar
Semi whipped cream floated on top of the coffee by pouring on the back of a spoon.
No straw please. Drink it through the cream!

doh,i forgot about this thread.also forgot about saint patricks day as well.today will be meatloaf,cheddar mashed potatoes.i will have corned beef and cabbage,at least once this weekend.my brother says haggis is good.is he kidding?besides that's a scottish dish right?

Here's a recipe for the beloved Haggis of Scotland. In addition to the other naughty (read 'delectable') bits, the lungs are traditionally included in Scotland, but are omitted here as it's illegal to sell lungs in the U.S. (Any clues as to why, anybody?). Some folks also think that liver shouldn't be used ..."


1 sheep's lung (illegal in the U.S.; may be omitted if not available)
1 sheep's stomach
1 sheep heart
1 sheep liver
1/2 lb fresh suet (kidney leaf fat is preferred)
3/4 cup oatmeal (the ground type, NOT the Quaker Oats type!)
3 onions, finely chopped
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon freshly ground pepper
1/2 teaspoon cayenne
1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
3/4 cup stock
Wash lungs and stomach well, rub with salt and rinse. Remove membranes and excess fat. Soak in cold salted water for several hours. Turn stomach inside out for stuffing.
Cover heart and liver with cold water. Bring to a boil, reduce heat, cover and simmer for 30 minutes. Chop heart and coarsely grate liver. Toast oatmeal in a skillet on top of the stove, stirring frequently, until golden. Combine all ingredients and mix well. Loosely pack mixture into stomach, about two-thirds full. Remember, oatmeal expands in cooking.

Press any air out of stomach and truss securely. Put into boiling water to cover. Simmer for 3 hours, uncovered, adding more water as needed to maintain water level. Prick stomach several times with a sharp needle when it begins to swell; this keeps the bag from bursting. Place on a hot platter, removing trussing strings. Serve with a spoon. Ceremoniously served with "neeps, tatties and nips" -- mashed turnips, mashed potatoes, nips of whiskey.

Yeah, I can see where whiskey would be required! I'd definitely have to be good and drunk to try Haggis, and I'm usually pretty adventurous when it comes to tyring new things.

I think I'll stick to corned beef and cabbage for St. Patrick's Day.

hey what we don't know won't kill us....I remember about 25 years ago...I tried "Mountain Oysters" at a huge gathering..next morning when I found out they were "balls"..I yucked up for about three hours..and then started consuming again...not Mountain oysters..but it didn't stop me from eating lol!

I was watching the food channel and they featured a place that had the deep-fried "Mountain Oysters"...they showed some lady sitting there with a big ol' basket of them saying "theres nothing like a nice big basket of mountain oysters...mmmmmm" :lol:

I made so much yesterday it corned beef and cabbage again today. Saturday was the best. We drove to Tarpon Springs and bought some Jumbo Gulf Shrimp heads on right off the boat. I cooked them shells heads and all, in a big iron skillet with butter, garlic, chipotle powder, lime, Tecate beer and more butter and spices. Big slices of crusty bread for mopping and more Tecate from washing them down. They taste more like lobster when cooked in the shell.

on the topic of gross foods....head cheese. My grandmother always made it from scratch whenever we visited - yes, she purchased a whole hog's head to cook down to nothing and then allowed it to congeal in the fridge. Then it was sliced and eaten on toast. Not by me, though. I've never been able to even look at anything remotely meat-based that jiggles like jello. ewwwwwww!

Tonight's dinner (on a better note) will be something simple - I'm on a major search for a document that is *somewhere* in the many boxes I'm still trying to unpack from our move. It's a document worth about $200 to me right now, so I'm frantically searching.

Update...6:16 P.M....older son has taken the reins and is cooking dinner! :-)

I loathe that stuff - I absolutely hated it when we went to my grandparents' house and I had to sit at the table and watch my dad and granddad eat that nasty stuff.

However, I loved it when I got to sit on grandpa's lap and drink "coffee" (ok, more milk than coffee), because my grandpa would take the moo-cow creamer container and walk it across the table going "moooooooo"...LOL :lol:

Last time I cooked grape tomatoes they exploded because I forgot to slit them?
I remember that! Be careful this time.

Otherwise, that combo sounds really good!

Next week....mostly junk food at Disneyland! They have this homemade corn dog, but instead of a hot dog, they use a hot link :D Thats my vice when I go to Disneyland.
