I sent a validation letter to afni, over a supposed 1k debt. After 30 days of no response I sent them a 'you have 30 days, if I don't hear from you, the whole thing is null and void', letter.

I got a letter back from them yesterday, dated the 21st of Sept. It says that I didn't supply enough information for them to investigate it, that they need a photocopy of my drivers license and a valid phone number. Oh, and at the bottom, it says it's an attempt to collect a debt.

So do I send them a letter back laughing in their face for wanting me to do their job for them?

Actually I'm thinking about saying that all of the info they needed was supplied in the first two letters? And seeing as they don't have enough info in their own system to validate it, that it's an admittance that they in fact cannot validate it and I'll expect them to remove it from my credit report in thirty days?

Also, isn't it a fine-able offence to continue to attempt to collect while it's in dispute? I know there was a court case here in AZ where they fined an agency for having that stamped on their dispute letters.

Any advice would be great! Thanks in advance!

I agree with cajun. And don't send them any additional info about youself. You don't have to send them anything, let alone a copy of your drivers license. As far as verifying, those such as Experian are a joke. The simply send a message to the collector, and the respond "yes we have this alleged debt", etc. no proof.
