I have approx. $9,000.00 in creit card debt and i am behind ALOT my husband gets ssi for $650.00 per month and I am on unemployment right now of $440.00 per month. I s there a payment I can afford of about $75.00 to $1oo.oo per month?

You don't really have enough debt to file a bankrupcy so I would suggest that you enter some type of repayment program. Often you can enter some sort of debt counseling program that will help reduce your monthly payment and lower the interest along with stopping the late fee's.

Be sure to research any company you choose to go with if you wish to try this service because you will need to make sure you get a very reputable company who deals honestly with you. There are some who don't.

Also should you chose to enter a debt counseling program please be aware that your creditors are not required to accept this service or any proposal sent to them. If they do it is very important that you get a copy of each accepted proposal letter and know which ones have accepted it and which ones havent.

especially that if you have $9000 in debt today that many years from now someone will be sending you an offer to settle for less than a thousand! and these junk debt buyers would consider themselves lucky if you paid it!then of course after you pay this--they will resell debt to someone else! don't pay anything unless you can pay it all off to original creditor!

Sometimes the creditor will work with the card holder and sometimes they won't. There isn't really a correct answer to that question.

Many people here don't have the option of paying the origional creditor because it's already some to another company. Those that do should of course pay the creditor if they are uncomfortable in dealing with a CA but don't make the mistaken belief that because you are paying the creditor doesn't mean the collection agency isn't also getting paid.

volleyballmom I am no expert at all just offering my opinions from research I have done after being abused by a debt collector--the Bud Hibbs sight and believe me--I am in no way getting a penny for endorsement but this was one sight I felt was really there for the right reasons--says quote"debt collectors have NO power and NO authority and should NEVER be trusted. They will lie and cheat you to get at your money. If it's NOT in writing it's NOT a deal" also "Beware-paying a debt collector will NOT get an account removed from your credit report. They do not have that authority" My thoughts on this whole process are simply this after searching many sights and seeing what has happened to so many--if you didn't pay the original debtor--don't pay anyone--let them take you to court--your fico score will still be neg effected even if you choose to settle and could still be effected for many years to come--once it falls into debt collector's hands--integrity and honor are not something they can offer to give you back--they just act like they have the power to do so! Until a complete overhaul of the debt collection system in this country is done--if you weren't able to pay original creditor--my advice is don't pay at all--maybe I'm wrong-I think they are using terrorism tactics!

OHH.WOW!! Ok...here's a question for ya!! I posted a new thread, called , " CA won't make payments arrangments". Now.....this company owns my account now, just won't take anything less, or re-arrange anything for me. They say they , "won't accept it". However....if I keep paying on it ( what I can afford) and keep proof of payments,do they have to 'credit' payments, to my account?

Okay I am still learning about the debt collection process--Fyi-what is the percentage of the accounts that the company you represent actually takes people to court for vs. selling off the bad debt ? after the "180 day " time frame that I have repeatedly heard Bud Hibbs referring to although am not sure what this time frame is? The company I dealt with on first contact screamed that the quote "next step would be prosecution"--did they not take me to court because I didn't make transaction they attempted to collect?-or did they not take me to court because they only threaten to do so? How many people on this sight have been sued by collection agencies and lost? Good idea for a new thread because I am obviously clueless as to what normally happens. Thanks for your input!
