keeping track of credit scores

What's the best way to keep track of your credit scores, without having the wallet ripped offa your ass in the process? I'm getting reports from the big 3. I'm also getting the idea that it's not enough. I'd like a better idea of how I'm doing. But I'd rather not pay an arm and a leg for the info.

Now with a credit monitoring service to track your progress and it will include some fake scores that will go up and down but are not to be relied on for credit decisions.True Credit is the most common service from truecredit.com

I use Credit Secure from Amex but you need a Amex account in goo

I use Credit Secure from Amex but you need a Amex account in good standing to enroll. I also use True Credit as a backup.

Related question: Do you know if anybody offers a reliable service that will monitor more than one person's scores? Ferinstance, a husband and wife?
