I thought about telling them I have contacted an attorney and that they will be hearing from them if they don't lay off.
ANy state law will say that they cannot threaten criminal action
ANy state law will say that they cannot threaten criminal action unless it really is a criminal action, which debts are merely civil. On those grounds, you should file complaints with your DFI, AG, and maybe even the FTC.
If your grandmother is not on the loan, they should't be telling her anything about your debt - that is a violation of the Graham-Leach-Bliley Act and probably state law too.
Just stand up to them when they call; tell them you know what they are doing is illegal and you won't tolerate it. And tell them if they don't stop they will be the ones on the chopping block.

I didnt know revealing info about a debt to a 3rd party was a GLBA (Gramm-Leach Bliley Act) infraction...I do a lot of information security work with a bank and outsourcers and understood that it applied as a data protection mandate for safeguarding stored non-public consumer data.
But to the poster, if it gets bad enough with your grandmother, call the police in addition to filing the complaints to the parties that DebtCruncher listed.

GLBA doesn't just pertain to records databases -- it governs all "non-public personal information" and any release thereof, which includes the fact that a debt exists and anything else about that account. The release of that information to anyone without a legitimate purpose does indeed violate the GLBA, as well as the consumer's right to financial privacy.
Heck, I'm sure PDLs don't give their customers a privacy notice anyway; so that in itself is against GLBA.

Thanks DC...I know there are a lot of facets to the GLBA. And unfortunately GLBA is probably the tip of the iceberg with regard to thier lawbreaking.
You took the bait!! LOL! I saw that you were on post 999 when I posed that.

Thanks for giving me some fuel :) I made 999 a few hours ago but then ran out of ammo. I figured I'd watch TV for a while and by then there'd be something I could reply to. So thanks for that.
Congrats DC!! Lets get that HOF poll going on the pub.

Shelly I know it may seem drastic but maybe you should consider changing your grandmothers phone number and maybe even your own. If you tell the telephone company you are getting harrassing phone calls they will not charge you. It makes me sick that these scumbags would harrass/terrify an elderly woman. I hate them and hope they all get banned.
