Okay - big financial mess here, but I'm determined to get it resolved. From my online research the past few days I have learned:

(1) Send a debt validation request (oops - who knew!)

(2) Send a cease and desist letter (whew - having trouble explaining the call the inlaws got)

(3) Never ever EVER give your banking information to the CA. Crap.

Okay, the CA is united recovery systems and I don't like anything I have read about them at all. They have been excessively persistent, but (other than the call to the inlaws) the rep has been pleasant. I agreed to have a monthly amount taken from my account each month.

I want this stopped ASAP. Can I do this? How?

I plan to get to outside help with my debt. I do not want any involvement with URS right now and I am not at all certain about what this money is going towards or how. I'm not certain of anything other than I need their hands off my bank account.

Advice? Thanks.

Well you got the rules right, but maybe a little too late since you already gave them your bank info.

The first thing you should do is send them a written statement that they no longer have permission to access your bank account. Send it certified, with return receipt.

I'd say give a copy of that letter to your bank as well, and tell the bank to block any ACH's from that company. Unfortunately, I think the bank may charge you a stop payment fee to do that.

I think that if the CA tries to take money after you do this, then you could file complaints against them.

You can cancel your arrangements at anytime just call them up and tell them that you want to cancel your arrangements. I'm sure they will press you to keep them and say the balance is due and so on. As long as you hold to your decision then it should work out. Be aware though that collection agencies are not required to accept arrangements at all as it is their job to collect the balance in full upon default.

Also verbal does hold especially if they go through the trouble of having the arrangements verified which can consist of a second party silent monitoring the information or having a 3rd part enter the conversation to confirm the information.
