Hi Dee
Welcome to the forums.
The collection agencies are governed under the Federal laws termed as the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act. According to the laws under this act, you are offered protection from the illegal methods used by some debt collectors. If a collection agency is harassing you, send a cease and desist letter to stop all the communication.
It's a pity that many of the collection agencies are not concerned about the stated Federal laws and are regularly in the violation of it. Among them, United Legal Corporation is also short-listed. This is one of those illegal companies that will lie, deceit people and will misrepresent your accounts.
United Legal Corporation will not send you any written documentation and will try in every possible way to intimidate you and your family. They will like to discuss matters over the phone which keeps them in safe side. If you request to send them information through postal service, this is certainly not going to happen. My opinion to you is to avoid them as far as possible.

United Legal Corporation keeps on harassing me
United legal Corporation pretended to be lawyers. My mother who lives in a different state, gave my phone number unknowingly. They called her and informed about an ongoing investigation taking place in my name. she said they I don't live there and he replied very arrogantly. A few days later ???Tom' called up and said that he was one of my school friend. My mother gave my phone number to him. He called up my girlfriend and enquired about some tax related things. She gave my address and the work phone number. I started getting calls from Eric asking for $940.00 on an account to Goldstar Financial. I have never used such an account and I asked for more information about it. He just didn't say anything about it but kept on threatening me on garnishing my wages if payment is not made within a couple of days. I have already filed bankruptcy in the years 2001 and I have pretty much dealt with such debt collectors. I also knew that my credit was well maintained since my bankruptcy was discharged. Thinking that the ???Gold Star??? account might have been discharged in bankruptcy, I asked for some verification of this account before I pay it. They don't have any intentions of sending the information and keep calling me at work. I decided to send a cease and desist letter through registered mail with return receipt. I have received the ???return??? postcard several days later and ???Eric' claims that he has never received anything. He still calls me at home and work on a daily basis. I will now file complaints where you will say. Thanks

Hi Andrews
Welcome to the forums. Not sending anything in written proves the illicit behavior of the said company. If they have owned your debt genuinely, they would not have shaken in providing the necessary information.
Calling you regularly at work and home is a violation of the fdcpa law especially after sending the cease and desist letter. The 'receipt' proves that they have received your letter.
You can consult your attorney about this situation and also file your complaints at the FTC, BBB and the state attorney general office.
I hope necessary actions will be taken against them as consumer complaints are always on the rise.

I just got off the phone with a lady by the name of "Ms. George", who is with the United Legal Corporation. I had set up a payment for 97.50 on September 30 through my bank account and I had noticed that it was not posted. I decided to call and see why. This lady which is an overstatement, was very rude right off the back. When I asked why I had to pay an extra $25 for a returned check she said I needed to be a little less rude. I was shocked because I have a large amount of patience and she was the one being rude. The check was returned because the account couldn't be found, not because there was insufficient funds. I feel that was not my fault because I gave them the right information. Either way she ended up hanging up on me. I was so upset I called back requesting her name and to speak to someone else. I was told by another lady that the complaint would be filed and that I would get a call about it. I'm glad this site was here so I could read more about there horrible business. What can I do?
Ashley, did you speak with the supervisor of United Legal Corp?
Ashley, did you speak with the supervisor of United Legal Corp? Was the payment on 30th Sept set up written or verbal?
If you have a written proof of it along with your bank details, then I am sure you will put yourself in stronger place against them. You can also discuss it with your attorney.
Tsmur, do let us know how your attorney dealt with United Legal.

Good Morning all. I too have been having problems with this company. I"ve talked to a "Ms. Lopez". She is very rude. She called my job and someone told her that I didn't work there. She then called me back and left a message on voicemail calling me a liar and telling me that she knows that was me that picked up the phone and said I did not work there. When I called back and explained that she was wrong she was still rude and I asked for a supervisor. The supervisor "Steve Harris" got on the phone and did absolutely nothing. He ended up transferring me back to her so we can "work it out". This company does not need to be in business. Their employees are rude and have no professionalism at all. I'm glad to know I'm not the only one, but at the same time I'm mad. I have never received anything in the mail about what I owe.

Hi Monique
I am sorry to know that you have been harassed by the representative of United Legal Corporation. Using harsh and abusive language on the phone is a violation of the federal law and needs to be dealt legally.
You should lodge your complaints at the FTC, BBB and the local attorney general office in your state against them. They will take necessary actions towards the complaints of the consumers.

I may be the only one but in the spring, I was contacted by them over one(of a few) of my stupid payday loans. I knew I owed the money and I told them I wanted to pay. They were more than happy to work out a repayment with me. I even had some issues with my payments and they worked with me and i paid them off. They didn't threaten me but again, I may be a lucky exception
Oh my God
i worked at united legal and i know that the name of the company is "united legal corp...changing the image of third party collections". and the y have. they are very adament about disciplining/terminating empoyees that break the fdcpa. they have to be rude because no one will pay thier bill if they say please. debtors are unresponsible people that make excuses and have laws that protect them. if someone owed you money and they never paid wouldnt you get mad? of course no one should get carried away, saying you will go to jail .etc.but some debtors either need someone to spank them or talk to them in a calm voice or let them talk themselves into paying the bill. regardless MOST debtors are children and we are their guidance on putting a debtor back on finacial track. if you paid your bills and didnt borrow money you wouldnt be on this page would you? you would be on ebay buying something because you can afford it.so everyone, lift your skirt, grab your balls and pay your bills and dont put blame on anyone else besides yourself. EVERYONE, THESE ARE THE PEOPLE WHO HAVE YOUR INFORMATION AVAILABLE TO THEM!!! THIS PERSON SEEMS TO BE MILDLY RETARDED YET APPARENTLY HAS ACCESS TO YOUR CREDIT FILE!!!
Its because of half whits like you that alot of us are here.... because youre too stupid to spell the names correctly, or copy numbers, or dial the right phone number. Some of us dont have any debt at all except the ones you dirty scam artists lie and say we have.
Do you even have to go through an interview process or do they just look for the lowest IQ scores and hand over the phone??

Do you really think that response was good? There is no reason to argue but I know most people want to pay their debts. It is just that the normal human being thinks of ways to get out of it. Dont get mad if you think so called dimwits have your file information. You still are responsible for your own debt. And another thought. The amout of people that come on message boards to complain are the minority. Most people do pay their bills and pay back when a debt collector calls. It is just that you guys are the Difficult Debtor, I'm sorry to say but you know i am right. So if there are any debtors out there that do owe a bill, a company like ULC will help you make Good Arrangements to resolve a debt. just make the arragements and pay it. Than you will recieve a Paid In Full letter. you may also be able to borrow money again. Unless the money was taken to puposely not pay back. So think about what i say and dont let debt consolidators scam you into thinking that they are there to help. The bottom line is everybody wants money. You out there have to be the smart ones. If you know a debt is owed pay it. it is amazing what you can get if you ask! ULC is legit and good luck to all of us debtors. gotta go now, i have to pay a bill.ha ha

Gosh!! That was a rude presentation, guest!! :) make sure that you pay something that is legitimate and the company has your debt info. Best of luck for not falling into the wrong hands!! If ULC has your account info and have given you the details correctly, go ahead and make arrangements with them. Your credit will go better from there.

I apologixe if i sound rude..(it is the collector in me). but really if a company has your information everyone knows what to do. I do not work for that company for my own reasons of improvements in my life, but any complaints about ULC will be taken care of in a professional matter no matter what if you notify a manager. I would like for consumers to know that ULC can be trusted to do the right thing with your money. Good company to have worked for and good company to pay your debts off with. it is not always fun to pay bills. good day and good luck.

I for one pay my bills on time and often pay more than the accual ammount. I have NEVER been in arrears for any of my bills.
I dont believe in the SOL - if you take out a loan or whatever you owe it.
The problem lies in the fraudulent practices of collection agencies having full access to your personal information. With this information they are able to create fake bills in order to scam you out of money. I have been a victim of this and judging by this site I can see this is VERY common.
If you read some of the posts by supposed "collectors" you will notice that some of them are accually dimwhits with your financial stability in their theiving hands.
I find it disgusting that this is legal and people accually defend this behavior.
Collection agencies have no right to search peoples records for private info if they do not owe money, nor do they have the right to lie to the credit bureaus if they do not have proof of debt.
Its pretty simple - Fraud is fraud
Fraud is fraud and you are confusing ulc with your local watch d
Fraud is fraud and you are confusing ulc with your local watch dealer on the street. Do your research and find out about ulc. Fake bills are illegal and the company would be closed down. collection agencies do not have the power to give fake bills to a credit reporting agency. They have proof and you could recieve proof of debt also. If you dont want to pay your bills, than you dont have to. But it is your name and credit. So ulc will be around for a very long time because the way that bussiness is conducted is professional. And you can say all the names you want about collectors but that is just a defence against not paying your bill and trying to justify what you did wrong. Besides the collector has to deal with very abusive debtors than will curse and threaten your life>very stressful. Especially whan they have to take the abuse or go get another job.so be kind to the company that was there when you needed the money. And no one else would help. Have a great day.

Maybe ULC is the only honest collection agency out there and maybe they dont commit fraud. Maybe they should be the only agency with a licence.
Watch dealers on the street? Thes are comapnies that have many complaints yet are still in "buisness"
It is a fact that many collection agencies do try to collect money from people who do not owe money.
It is a fact that many collection agencies lie to Equifax and Trans union.
It is not fair that they can claim you owe bills to companies youve never heard of and destroy your chances of getting credit because you refuse to pay a fake bill.
It is also not fair that those of us who DO pay our bills have to pay the price for those who cheat the system.
Collection agencies should have PROOF of debt, Proof that they tried to contact the "debetor" to let them know they have a debt they didnt create or authroise.
I know I didnt borrow any money from the "account" that I was screwed over for, and when I contacted the comany they had never heard of me either!!
I have been a victem of fraud, Identity theft and abuse from a collection agency that apoparently is not capable of doing so...
You may be an honest collector, your comapny may be honest... but there are many who are only in it to scam people out of their hard earned money.
This site is full of such stories.
P.S, If you are as honest as you say, keep up the good work.
P.S, If you are as honest as you say, keep up the good work. Maybe some collectors could learn a few things from you about respect and abiding the law.
RE: Make Sense (Guest)
So You do admit that collectors are rude?! I can tell that you are a collector. #1 using "NEVER" in a statement, automatically makes the statement false. You say that you've "NEVER" been arrears and pay your bills on time. I'd like to know what planet you live on. #2 you are right when you state that there are difficult debtors out there, so that means you should stoop to their level and get rude and ridiculous? NO...Just hang up on them and let them get what's coming to them (bad credit, wage attachments and so on). When you get rude, you are just as bad as the debtor. But I know what makes collectors so damn rude, the want the percentage of the money owed that will come to their pockets. That's all YOU really care about ULC can kiss A**. They are frauds and criminals. All Who Work for them.
LOL QueenOliveen, I think youre mixing up 2 different "guests".
LOL QueenOliveen, I think youre mixing up 2 different "guests". Theres a few of us posting as guests.
I for 1 am not a bill collector and never would take a "job" like that.
By never, I meant in arrears to the point of collections - if for some reasn I am to be late paying a bill I call the company to make arrangements.
I dont use credit cards and such, so that helps with not having too many bills, just phone, internet, cable... pocket change. So, I can honestly say that I have NEVER been in arrears and the statement is not false. I am also in Canada so I dont have the unfortunate burden of massive medical bills that Americans do. I feel so sorry for those whose lives are destroyed because of an illness they coldnt forsee and cant possibly afford to deal with.
As for just hanging upoon "collectors", that has to be the most insane thing to do!!
They do have your personal info and can make your life hell if you dont get it figured out - and its YOUR responsibility to figure out thier mistakes and fix their fraud attempts - they are not held accountable.
Just like you mentioned Queen, they ARE after a cut of the money and will do anything to get it even if you dont owe any money to anyone.
I can imagine that there are honest collectors out there, but I havent come across any. I agree with you totally, for the most part they are frauds and criminals.

It is simple. When a someone asks for proof of debt, it is sent out and verrified by the client and than givin to debtor. It is notated in your account when and what document was sent out. Keep in mind that there is debtors that get the proof and claim they never recieved proof. Thats when the going get tough and how a collector is to deal with a debtor. It depends on how a debtor is acting on the phone. Dont be rude to the collectors>they have your information.(and have families and problems just like everyone else) If you get pulled over by a cop because of something that you may or may not of done, you are not rude to the cop (even though who likes cops)you stay calm and try to explain yourself. The officer may or may not listen to you. and the nicer we are the more likely things will sway our way. Most of the time the cop gives you a ticket. And what do most people say? They say thank you. Same with a debt collector. You deserve the respect and so does the collector. do you think little old ladies get the same treatment as everyone else? No they get some consideration. collectors have to get the facts so they may deal with a debtor in the proper fashion. things are considered for college kids, single moms. people that borrowed money to help their kids. Every situation is different and a collector must be able to READ a debtor.Find out their story and try to give the best arragements possible to each individual.
I cant speak about all other agencies, but ULC you can trust. Do your homework and find out about that company please. they have nothing to fear or hide. Call them ask for proof or help, you may get someone that is rude or someone that is helpful. Just be smart and deal with a collector they way you would want to be dealt with.
Thank you
okay so rude guest makes some good points in the post above, so
okay so rude guest makes some good points in the post above, so lets consider this.. collection is a business, so in dealing with collectors we need to establish a business relationship and work from their. Remember that validation of a debt is not the same as having proven it in court... the fdcpa is rather vague in that area and so 1)if you are contacted by a collector and truly believe that you do not owe the debt, or are unsure, ask for validation.. if after you receive it and you still are of the position that the debt is not valid it needs to be disputed in writing, citing specific reasons for your position. This should be done to the CA, the original creditor and all major credit bureau's. If that dispute does not lead to an appropriate settlement and collection continues you can either a) litigate or b) wait for the Creditor to litigate and prove your case in court.
If you do owe the debt but are unsure as to the CA trying to collect and the validation is correctly provided, you can contact the original creditor for verification.
Now if you owe the debt adn can't pay it off in full, negotiate.. you have what the ca and creditor want.. money, they will generally take the easiest way out to get it. make arrangements you can afford adn stick to. Also expect and demand that you be treated in a professional and respectful manner ( and treat them the same way). If you are not call them on it, report it, document it and above all remain respectful on your part..
Sometimes its too late to ask for validation or despute a fraudu
Sometimes its too late to ask for validation or despute a fraudulent hit on your credit file - the dammage has already been done.
If someone owes a debt then they should pay it and work with the collection agency instead of against them. But everyone has the right to be notified that the agency has an account in their name, and the agency has the responsibility to have accurate information when they pull credit files and report negative information. When a cop pulls you over he at least asks you guestions and lets you know there is an issue and you have a chance to explain yourself - wich is not the case with collection agencies.
Sure there are debetors who try to scam their way out of paying, but those of us who do pay thier bills should not have to pay the price.
Its common sence: If you have an account be sure its real before marking up someones credit file.
Be sure it belongs to the person you are trying to contact and make sure you accually try to contact the person.
Dont be nasty or call people liars if they tell you they dont owe money or dont know of the person they are trying to get ahold of.
All of this validation crap wouldnt be happening if the agencies treated people with respect in the first place!
All i have to say is that it is not easy for a company to put in
All i have to say is that it is not easy for a company to put information on your credit. Everyone knows that what is on their credit is most likely a debt you ARE responsible for. That is like being in jail and saying your innocent. And also, the responsibility that a debt is paid is the consumers. You have watched court shows. Keep your reciepts. It is the law of the land.
thanks

Recipts? How do you keep recipts for an account you never knew existed?? How do you keep recipts for an account you didnt authorise? How do you keep recipts for an account that was never yours in the first place?
Obviously it is VERY easy for a collection company to file b.s on our files... the comments on the entire forum prove this.
And youre right rude guest, it IS like being in jail and saying your innocent - guilty untill proven innocent at your expence!
If you take out a debt you owe it back. If you didnt take out a debt you dont owe the collection agency anything, including your time, personal information or financial wellbeing. THAT should be the law of the land.
The law is the law. And we can go round and round. If a debt doe
The law is the law. And we can go round and round. If a debt doesnt belong to you the agency has to prove it.(read previous messages)If you did pay keep your reciepts.
So once again, another guest has the answers. Of course the fdcpa is a federal law. And they did a little more that just Jot down a law that is called FDCPA. It was taken in consideration that tactics were not appropriate in the 1970's so a pretty detailed law was made so that consumers could be safe AND the companies that are owed ALSO gets their money.(this is all common sense)the country creates hundreds of million dollars in personal debt and companies pass the expences on to you. This is the world we live in. There is no way that these debts are going away in the near future. So make friends with your collectors. You owe them at least that.(they might be able to help ya out)
And also, these are negotiations that are taken place when a collector calls. Be a smart negotiator.
thanks
rude guest.....but man he is good.
Yes the agecny should have to prove it, problem is, theyre not
Yes the agecny should have to prove it, problem is, theyre not. All attempts should be made to prove the debt is real, or belongs to the person BEFORE they destroy someones credit. So long as they dont ruin someones credit then its not that much of an issue.
Its too late when they pull your credit file and mark it up. Alot of important things ride on your credit score. It takes a very long time to clear it up and the collection agency will fight you to get the money anyways. The fdcpa is a federal law but it is not being enforced.

Monique -- Notice that your message has been since 2005 -- but I myself had gotten a call from this 'Ms.Lopez' on March 26, 2006 demanding that I pay the amount of $447.71 because I took out a payday loan from January and that information was forward to her company -- she stated that she's from the legal devison and told me if I don't pay that amount by 11am that day -- I will be prosecuted and legal action will be taking upon me and possible jail time. That was the first time I got a threaten call from anyone. I got sooo scared that I borrowed money from someone and ran over to pay the money thru money gram like she told me too -- she said to write to company : National processing - attention to Lopez. Gave me the account # and the receive code -- all the info that is needed for the money gram and told me it has to be before 11am. And so I did -- Until today..I kept on receiving calls from different company threatening me with the same reason -- One being Platium B-Service (company in money gram: Pre-litergation) in Jacksonville FL. for an amount of $700 -- I started to realize that something is really fishy. I started to look up the name of the company and came to find out these are all scams and that I have lost those money. I'm so pist at myself. I hope anyone that gets these people, make sure that you DON'T SEND THEM ANY MONEY. Don't listen to what they have to say -- just tell them to send you a written document and hang up. If not ..they will drill you and scare you. If anyone have any suggestion or comment, please rebuttal. Thx

Thank you 'Guest' I will definately do that. It is against the law that they threaten to get the police to come to my work place she mentioned something about me doing a wire account fraud -- I didn't remember exactly what was said, cuz I got so scare. And another thing is...she even called my brother. They have all of my info. I know I owe payday loans -- but when I ask her what payday loan it is -- she refused to tell me and continue on demanding the money and tell me what will happy if I don't send out by 11am.

Start recording your calls if its legal in your state.
If you owe money try your best to pay the original company because the collection agency is making money off you and thats why thier trying to embarrass you by calling your family. Doint let these jerks mess with you.

These last comments are rediciculous. The only true statement that was made from guest is that there is a Ms. George that is a collector there. And there is no way that she broke the law or disclosed any information to a third party as ur brother. The only other person that can discuss your debt is a spouse. And that is not always the case either. And saying that Ms. George was calling for a Legal Matter or saying you were going to Jail is false. There is better, legal tactics than that. I have said what to do in previous notes. But it is funny that the way people think. once again. check the agency and get proof of debt and pay it or make arragements. Oh , and also You said that Ms George said that you had till 11:00 to pay or else? That is called a deadline. Like i said these are negotiations to pay. There is a debt for one reason or another. And collectors are "professional debt collectors" dont be a "professional debtor". Like I said, be nice to your collector and negotiate a fair arragement to pay off your loan. Dont be stupid. Look at previous notes and use the information.
Thanks.....
Call me what u want, dont call me broke.
comment to Rude Guest
It's Ms. Lopez and NOT Ms.George. I was not rude at all. She was the rude one to me stating that I have to pay the money before 11 am or else they will take this into legal action and stated to me that there could possibily be jail time. Call it what you want, Deadline or whatever -- She can't even negotiate a payment plan with me. Refuse to give me any documentation and refuse to give me the name of the loan company that forwarded my info to her. It's all threatening sh*t that I realized after a couple of months that I have been robbed. She(Ms.Lopez) even called my brother stating the issue to him. I never mentioned that she pretend to be my brother. You said that the only person that she can disclosed this info to is my spouse -- and not my brother -- but SHE DID. Cuz he called me about it. Yeah, I slipped once...and now is pist. and will see what I can do about these idiots that are scamming people for money. Ms.Lopez is a b*tch!!! That's all I have to say.
You didn't get scammed. You are just not able to get a loan from
You didn't get scammed. You are just not able to get a loan from a bank or family because you have worn out your credit. These companies are there for you when no one else is. And yea they charge alot, but that is the price you pay when you have less than good credit.
I can also tell that you were not rude by the way your message was posted.(lil sarcasm never hurt no one)
And the only person that robbed you is someone that may have your information like a friend. We all hurt the ones we love. And no one is trying to rob you for a couple of hundred dollars. that is stupid. so common sence tells me that you took the loan out on purpose ..not to pay it back or a friend did it to you. You made your bed, so sleep in it.
good night and good luck
And also chandra, if anyone looks at your notes, you can see you
And also chandra, if anyone looks at your notes, you can see you are contradicting yourself about recieving the money. You stated that you wanted to make a payment arragement, and she wouldnt.
You also said that "you know you slipped once and is pist" so that says that you got the loan.
And like i said, Ms lopez is no longer there and for good reason. If she broke the law by giving your brother your debt information-no questions asked -fired. But can you really blame people for that? If I owed you alot of money and I wouldnt pay it back, you would call everyone and there mom and tell them what I did. So get over it.

Yeah -- that's what they all say when you call them back wanting to talk to the person who was working on your case. FIRED!!! blah blah blah--

If your loans are online, the online pdls will not have you arrested or charge you with anything. These scare tactics by the online pdls are getting out of hand, let alone from the collection agencies. Has the collection agency validated the debt? If not, send them a debt validation letter certified mail with return receipt.
