Here are some very good samples of letters that you could send for debt validation: http://www.debtconsolidationcare.com/letters/ You will find some very good examples that spell everything out for you.
As far as interest, I am not sure about that and I am sure someone will be along to answer this question.
They can charge you whatever interest is allowed under the terms
They can charge you whatever interest is allowed under the terms of the original contract, but that's it.

Seriously, the DV letter at the link posted above is OK, but not spectacular. It does not admit to owing anybody anything. It'd maybe a bit too mellow for my tastes, but I'm not an especially mellow kind of Wulf... Look around for a post by Cajunbulldog or JCEMT. Both of those fellows have good DV letters linkd in their signatures.

That bit in my sig means exactly what it says. When dealing with a collection agency, send them a DV letter by reflex [unless you're positive they're right]. This goes double with older debts. And don't send them dime one without proper validation.

NEVER assume that the debt must be yours because they are calling you about it. Also, never assume that the amount is correct just because they are telling you thats what is owed.
Also, when you say its old, how old? And what state do you live in?
