What has happened is that when you defaulted on your payments your interest rate that you were paying went up (probably WAY up) then they will add on late fees, over the limit fees. Now with that being said, this amount will keep going up as long as you don't pay it. They can add on interest for like forever. So as long as you still owe this they will keep adding on interest (per your original credit card contract) they may stop the other fees but the interest won't stop.
Now sometimes you can try and settle with them and ask for a pay for delete, but that is often rare that they will accept that offer, but you will have to pay them in one lump sum.

Do you know if this is an actual charge off, and is assigned to a JDB, or is this still with the OC. Although it will show as a paid charge off, or settled for less than the full amount, you may be able to settle for less than you owe with the OC, and if your lucky get a payment plan.
Chase is a stickler though - so it may be really tough to get them to cooperate.
Good luck OP!
yes it is a charge off
now that i know its a charge off how do i settle without making my credit score worse...

Chase is a really tricky. They do not sent to a Collection Agency because they use in house lawyers. What I would do is try to contact them by sending a settlement letter which you can find samples of here on this site. I would try to settle for less than 50% but I know that when I tried to settle with them, they would not take anything less than 50% but I was in the process of being sued by them. Give settlement a try, the worse they can say is no!!!! You do need to know though that they will want it in one lump sum or payments over no more than 4 months. Believe me I tried everything and they would not let me pay a settlement more than 4 months.
Good luck.
