also (while you looking) i have two collectors listed trying to collect the same doctor bill. i am going to send a letter to both places to verify the debt and obviously the one that actually provides me with proof will get the money. but im wondering how i get the other one to take thier filing off of my credit report.
thanks and sorry for the probably repeat questions. i've tried searching through topics and havent really found what i was looking for or couldnt understand what was being talked about. all this is fairly new to me.

On the dearly departed collection agency, that's an easy one. Send them a custom-tailored version of the letter I linked to below [wrote that first...] If they're outta business, obviously they can't validate the debt. Give it a couple weeks, just to be sporting. Then dispute the debt with the credit bureaus as "not mine".
On the doctor bill... Don't ask for "verification". Ask for "validation" [the words mean different things]. Send them each a customized version of this letter. Send them certified mail, return receipt requested, so you can prove the companies actualy got the letters, and keep the little green card that you get back. That's your ptoof. If either company actually manages to validate the debt, you'll know who to pay.

Hell, their computer system could've burned down, and taken their portfolio with it. These things do happen. Not nearly often enough, but they do happen.

OR they could have been sued so many times and lost, that they no longer have the funds to stay in business. OR the AG or FTC could have shut them down.
