As I'm sure we all know this site has fallen a bit from it's original status on Google search. This has resulted in a lower Debt CC point award per post. That means to me that the site could be doing a lot better. In my opinion on of the largest issues that is pulling this site down are the trolls. They are attempting to degrade the quality of the site and hoping to tank it. I believe the trolls that post here are a little more intelligent than they lead us to believe as they are succeeding.


We need to try to adopt a community policy in dealing with these people, the most effective (in my opinion) is to let the mods deal with them because responding in a like manner to them only degrades the topic in question and leads to the topic becoming locked (more often than not)

I believe that we need to take the higher road and ignore them. We all need to remember (myself included) that we, the community members, are acting on behalf of this site and that our actions (positive or negative) reflect on the sites quality. Essentially we act as a tier 1 customer service to others that come here seeking help. I want to see this site return to the level of prestige that it was when I first came here last September.

I know we can do this and I'm sure that everyone else here would like to see this as well. Additionally I want to say that I hope nobody interprets this post as me trying to jump down anyones throat as I am not trying to and if anyone takes it that way I apologize. I just want to do what is best for this site.

people like NNC is good.i saw yesterday he
posted two topics.both went away quick,but if
he chooses to respond there must be a way to
help that person plus refute him and people
like him.maybe Vikas could this as a question
of the week for suggestions.just a thought.

I have to say, one thing I noticed today I think is a really fantastic idea. My hats off to whoever was responsible for it.

Just delete the content in question from the troll's post, leaving the entry there with a comment that it has been deleted/edited. The troll, if he even comes back to look at the responses to his garbage, will see what has occurred and hopefully the wind will be taken out of his sails and he will soon get discouraged and stop. I know there has been some argument over whether it should be deleted or not, in the past, but I really feel it is the only, best way to handle NNC and other trolls.

Again, great job whoever is responsible for that!

JCEMT - you are absolutely, 100% correct.

However, I have seen numerous people (including myself) post the same directive hundreds of times. The only problem is, NOBODY LISTENS.

Everyone will agree here and say "yes, that's a good idea! From now on we need to ignore the trolls."

But I guarantee you that the next time there is a troll posting, everyone that just agreed will also be the same ones who go back to the old routine and reply to the troll.

So, I applaud your efforts, but don't hold your breath. And I'm sorry to sound pessimistic, JCEMT, I know you have good intentions; and I totally agree in being tier-1 customer service.

As a mod, I delete trolls posts when I see them. And I am also warning anyone who replies to the trolls, that I delete the replies too.

I would also caution the following:
read the content of the troll post. If it's defamatory and insulting it absolutely should go. In my time on the boards, I have also seen where some trolls actually did give good advice at times--albeit, very rarely, but it did happen. Anyone remember Doug Danger? He occasionally did this.
So the next time NNC comes along, before we automatically hit the delete button, take a minute to read the post. If it's drivel, send it to the trash.

kscornell - certainly! I remember Doug Danger, and there have been others that gave some useful info.

I always do read posts before I delete them. I won't delete just because it has the word "collector" in the name, etc ... but if the post is just a "pay your bills" rant than I will kill it, and anyone else responding to it.

Yes, edit the members that attack back at the troll, as long as it is an attack. If it is simply pointing out the errors in the troll's posts, I don't think there is a problem with a response like that.

We also might need to edit the members/moderators posts that feel they have to let everyone know how they shouldn't even be responding to the trolls post and how those responses are pulling the thread back up to the top of the list. Those very same posts berating us are accomplishing the exact same things; acknowledging the troll and pulling the posts back to the top of the lists.

So we are all guilty of this. Even the moderators. So, those in charge of moderating the boards might also need to set a better example.

But we might also need to be a little careful about who we edit, members or guests, as we don't want to be accused of censorship. Or having a personal vendetta against someone simply because we don't like them or what they post.
