Sure they can counter sue but they will still need to prove their case. How much do they claim you owe them and how much are you suing for? My guess is that if they could validate that they would have but since your dragging them into court they might as well try to counter.

I got them for up to$6,000 in violations including treble damages. They say I owe them $860 which I don't. It has been 2 months since I sent a DV letter and they never validated.

I don't even think their attorney has it anymore. He is a debt collector and a bad one at that. I haven't heard a peep in a while. I also tried to verify the collection agency he was going to sue for on my credit report and it got deleted in 15 days.
I am going to the court house probably next week to get the paper so I can file it in small claims.
