Are creditors under an obligation to say if they sold the debt?

I recently sent out a dv letter which stopped the CONSTANT collection calls 29 days ago (nco financial). I now got a dv response saying that "according to their records, the account has been closed".

On my credit report, the oc only shows a charge off and doesnt say it was sold.

how would i find out?

Hah! I just called cap 1 and the automated message says they have "discontinue my account" and i should contact the "new owner". Being how I was getting calls from NCO until they received my DV letter, and the calls have since stopped and i received the "account closed" in the mail.. this is my first victory in cleaning up my credit!!!

Cap1 is not known for selling off delinquent accounts while still w/in statute. They are the elephant that never forgets and they keep excellent records so if it comes time to sue, they can produce the docs needed. They also never let you forget by reporting religiously every month. When was the last time the tradeline was updated? If it was updated w/in the last 30 days I would say they still own it and have assigend NCO to collect for them. Is NCO reporting as well? If it has been sold, you can dispute the accuracy of the TL, Cap1 will verify with new info ($0 balance, sold transferred to another lender). When was the last time you paid current on the account?
