I am looking through all the posts for some answers, but also wanted to post my ?'s in one place in case someone can answer them all for me :)

1. Has anyone ever gotten Sallie Mae to settle? I owe them $$$$, have been paying them for I think 6 years and it seems like my balance isn't going down at all...

2. My husband and I have 2 cards we want to settle on. We own a house, 1 car that is paid off and another lease car. Will our house/car be affected by the settlement? If we can settle we will have no problems making the car payment.

3. How do fees work for a reputable company? I see in all the advice I'm reading "don't pay up front fees, and watch out for fees taken from your monthly payment"... so how exactly will a reputable company get a fee?

4. I am currently researching reputable debt settlement companies. I just looked over Rise Above Debt and they look reputable. Can anyone recommend a company that they used?

TIA for any help and advice :D

when i enrolled in a debt settlement program, i went with united communications. i was $52000 in debt, and to date have resolved 2 of my accounts. one was a 43% settlement, the other 40%. I've been happy, they keep me up to date on whats going on and i can only say nice things about the staff

I had got a worst experience in Sallie Mae. Actually the thing is I had 5 student loans with Sallie Mae also I had a few consolidated and had been paying my loans just as stated on the mailed monthly invoice. In the beginning I felt No problem. After some time, I started receiving calls that my loans were some odd days late. I was not aware of this, what had happened is they just applied the sent in money to the loans that they felt they wanted to. They had requested a foreberance and they said I was out of foreberance time and they ensured me that I had some. So I sent in the money that they requested to do the forebarence.

I kept recieving calls 3-4 a day and it took about 4 days to answer there call. They informed me that my forbarence didn't go threw and I was so many day delinquent and I needed to pay today to settle this dispute. I informed them that I had paid them not only the monthly payment, but the 150 more for a forebarence that was not even granted. I asked for a refund on the money for the forebarence and they denied me and just asked for more money.

I don't know if they are federal loans - I filled out all the applications in the financial aid office at school back in the days. I 'assume' that they are federal... *sigh* I have to figure this out. They are calling my house 3-4-5 times a day. I talked to someone on Saturday and they put me in forebearance till January. So that's good. But still, I need to do something, this $400/month payment is killing me.
