Credit Report Inaccurate?

Is the account number listed on your credit report (for your credit card account) suppose to be different than the account number that you have shown on your credit card statements from that creditor? I really need to know if I should notify the Credit Agencies about this.

The CRA's will generally omit several numbers from your accounts as a form of protection in case the report falls into the wrong hands. They sometimes "x" out part as well. If all the other info is correct, then I don't see an issue.

If a debt collector has an account they sometimes put a file number on a credit report, as to the legality of that I do not know. I have one I am fighting right now as the original creditor they claim I owe is not on my credit report. They have a credit card number but what they put on my credit report is a 6 digit file number.
