Can anybody tell me...

Is the account number listed on your credit report (for your credit card account) suppose to be different than the account number that you have shown on your credit card statements from that creditor? I really need to know if I should notify the Credit Agencies about this.

Correct, they sometimes also scramble the numbers to help protect a consumer.

If a debt collector has an account they sometimes put a file number on a credit report, as to the legality of that I do not know. I have one I am fighting right now as the original creditor they claim I owe is not on my credit report. They have a credit card number but what they put on my credit report is a 6 digit file number.

I have a situation where the account number, stated in the complaint as "account number with original creditor", is completely differenty than the account number my cc statements with that creditor. I can't find ANY evidencial rules or burden of proof requirements for how to defend myself.
