CA's don't usually go away. If they don't get anything back, the letters will continue to come monthly. Chances are, if you really didn't get a letter, they just simply weren't able to get ahold of you. This is why it's very important that you should check your credit file regularly.
If you've disputed through Experian, then you have started the first step. However, that doesn't mean you may have missed something on another report perhaps. If possible view all 3 credit files. By disputing an entry through your credit file, the credit bureau will advise that you are disputing.
Sending letters certified mail is just for our protection. Collection companies feel that if the letter simply doesn't come back to them, means that we received it. Sending letters of dispute or legal action to agencies can easily get lost unless we know someone signed for it.

That's the thing--I have been getting no letters from ANY of these places. No phone calls. They were put on my credit 1 1/2-2 years ago. But I have NOT been getting any letters or calls. Like I said--this year was the first time I had ever pulled my own credit report-THAT is when I first saw those collection items. Would it be a waste to try and send a Validation of Debt latter at this point? Thanks

Since your account is reporting collection and is unpaid, you need to pay this account at the earliest so that there is slight improvement in your credit worthiness. Try to locate the agencies and send a letter to work out a payment plan.
debt validation letter is the most powerful weapon in order to know the accurate details about your past debt. If there had been no such law, any agency would have easily misrepresented your debt accounts. Please read this page for a better explanation.
