My Amex account keeps bouncing around.

First it was turned over to United Recovery Systems. I asked for debt validation and received a 3" stack of statements.

I talked to them and asked to settle the account. They said "make an offer." I made an offer with the funds I had in hand, which was about 40% of the balance, on a balance of over $15k.

They made me submit all my household financial info with my offer, even though this debt is in my name only and my spouse was not an authorized user.

URS never responded to my offer. When I called two weeks later to check on it, they sent me back to Amex. I called Amex and as soon as I typed in my acc't number got a recording saying the account was now with NCO.

I never received any communications from NCO. Now today I get a letter in the mail that the account is now with an attorney's office in my state.

What now? Why would Amex just ignore my settlement offer and send it on to two different collectors?

I fear that they saw something in the financial info I sent them that makes them think I have more money to settle with. But I don't - I truly only have enough funds on hand to pay settlements to a few of my credit cards right now. Everyone else will have to wait.

Does this mean I am getting sued just because it's gone to an attorney? Has anyone had a similar experience with Amex?
