A collection agency is harassing me for a ssn that is not mine. what should i do ?

I'd just ignore them. Not your SS number = not you.
I'm assuming they got the name right, there are over 40 people with my first and last names in my state. The main identifier when it comes to a CA is a SS# not a name.

I don't see the point of getting into a legal battle with someone obviously not looking for you.

Or is there more to it? Like do you owe this CA? Have you ever heard of them or done business with them?

How exactly are they harassing you?

A quick visit to:
http://www.howmanyofme.com/

will tell you just how common your name is (there are 418 of me). If you are 100% certain this is a case of mistaken identity, send them a full cease comm letter. Also, if you have not already done so, pull your free credit reports @ www.annualcreditreport.com and make sure that they have not reported to the CRA's.
