Status question-- Is this account in collections?
Date: Tue, 06/02/2009 - 10:59
After several months of not being able to pay on an account, I've received a collection letter from LTD Financial Services, but the originating company (a retailer) sent me a bill for last month. LTD's letter instructs me to "make check payable to Citibank."
Now that I can, I'd like to log on and just pay Citibank, but my account online has been disabled. When I call, the automated payment service says that I need to go through LTD, who is now handling my account. But if they still want the payment made out to Citi, is there any chance I can still be able to deal with that company?
I'd just start making online payments to LTD because I'm not intent upon a settlement (though it would be nice, given that much of the debt is now from fees as opposed to principal), but I'm really hesitant to give a company with such a dreadful reputation my bank info and I'm concerned they'll "lose" payment records because I haven't tried to argue them down and thus may seem to be a good piggy bank.
I've never dealt with collections before — advice will be greatly appreciated. :)
One more question: They aren't calling me... they have a family member's cell number. This person isn't answering, but is annoyed. Is telling them that they have the wrong number likely to convince them to stop?

Firstly, before making any payment to LTD, you should get the debt validated from them to check whether LTD actually owns the debt or not.
Secondly, did LTD provided you with their account details with Citibank at which the payment are to be made?

It you read above, it appears Citibanks automated system is telling him them to go thru LTD. Citibank uses a lot of CA's for third party collection....they dont sell their accounts right away.

CALL Citi and ask them...if they gave it to a CA, they will tell you who and give you a phone #.
Sounds like Citi still owns it, but farmed it out to a CA...ask Citi if they can recall the account from the CA, b/c you would like to set up payment arrangements with Citi directly.
