Hello all,

After several months of not being able to pay on an account, I've received a collection letter from LTD Financial Services, but the originating company (a retailer) sent me a bill for last month. LTD's letter instructs me to "make check payable to Citibank."

Now that I can, I'd like to log on and just pay Citibank, but my account online has been disabled. When I call, the automated payment service says that I need to go through LTD, who is now handling my account. But if they still want the payment made out to Citi, is there any chance I can still be able to deal with that company?

I'd just start making online payments to LTD because I'm not intent upon a settlement (though it would be nice, given that much of the debt is now from fees as opposed to principal), but I'm really hesitant to give a company with such a dreadful reputation my bank info and I'm concerned they'll "lose" payment records because I haven't tried to argue them down and thus may seem to be a good piggy bank.

I've never dealt with collections before — advice will be greatly appreciated. :)

One more question: They aren't calling me... they have a family member's cell number. This person isn't answering, but is annoyed. Is telling them that they have the wrong number likely to convince them to stop?
