Hi there! So I received a call from Progressive Financial a week ago trying to get in contact with me and since they have called a couple more times and leave messages. I emailed them to give them my address so they could mail me what the debt is that I owe, how much I owe and how I can figure out to pay it off. My poor dad received a couple calls today from them asking for my info and they TOLD HIM I OWE DEBT and they were trying to collect it. Even though they have my number and now they have my address (which I was emailed back that I still need to call, ugh). But they told him I owe them debt, that is against the law correct? Especially since why do they need to call them when they have my number? Ugh I hate these guys already and I just started dealing with them.

What can I do now?

As per the FDCPA, the creditor needs to send you a DV notice within 5 days of initial communication if they called you up over phone, before they start the debt collection process. In the meanwhile, I think that you should pull out your credit report and check whether Progressive Financial is there in your report against any debt. If you find them in your report, send them a debt validation letter by certified mail.

They have 5 days to send you a first contact letter, not a debt validation letter. You should get their business address and request validation. Did your dad happen to record the call? Be sure to check about recording conversations with your state laws.

Email isn't a good way to request or change information. Put everything in writting and keep copies.
