Unfortunately, I have not been the most responsible person when it comes to credit. I would like to get this taken care of and I would like to know how should I get started? Is there any examples of letters I can use to send to the companies I owe? Any information would be appreciated.

First of all my advice to you is to pull all three of your credit reports and compare them to each other. All three are different and don't report the same way. There are examples of letter in the DIY section. Make sure when you send these letters send them certified mail/return receipt requested for proof of delivery.

Dispute anything that you are questioning as they have 30 days to respond to your written request. Others will be along shortly to advise you further. Good luck.

There are letters you can send, but it may be easier to just call them and try to set up payment arrangements. However, as stated above, you should definitley get your credit reports and see if your debts are still with the original creditor or if they have been turned over to collections. Once you figure all that out, calling may be the best way to go. A lot of companies (especially cc companies and collection agencies), will work with you on a payment plan. If its too much or to confusing or they are being to difficult or mean(mine were) contact a reputable debt management company and they will do all the legwork for you.
