i was contacted by a creditor and they told me i had 24 hours to pay its 5 years old can they do that

What kind of creditor, was it a PDL, a collection agency, or? A lot of times if you've had a PDL, bottom-feeder collection agencies will buy your personal information and try to get money from you. I've had a couple of these "you have 24 hours to pay - good luck!" phone calls myself.

The statute is probably about to run out, usually 4 to 5 years. So they are making a final attempt to collect.

If they call back tell them to send you a copy of the "original" contract with the original lender for you to verify via USPS. Do NOT admit to owing anything. Admitting to a debt by trying to make arrangements can restart the statute, so then they will have another 4 to 5 years to hound you.
