Why would Capital One sell off my account?

I just got a letter from Allied Interstate stating my account with Capital One was placed to their office for collection and I owe $1172.00. I just went online and my account was listed as 1 payment past due, but I then checked my Quicken files and I have made payments every month.

I know this months payment went to them after the due date but it has been received and credited. But why would they sell off my account over based on potentially being one month behind?

Do I waste my time contacting Allied Interstate since this is clearly a scam?
