Has anyone had a positive Debt Management experience in NY

I am currently in deep with credit card debt ($85K) but I have been able to manage making minimum payments each month. Recent economic conditions has resulted in a significant reduction in pay which will make it much harder (maybe impossible) to remain current.
I would prefer to do the right thing and pay off my debt but have come to the conclusion that I will probably need to work with a debt management company or credit counselor to get this done. The thought of doing so scares me as I am afraid of getting scammed and further in a hole!!
Has anyone out there had a positive experience with a debt management or credit counseling company in NY state. If you have worked with an honest and reliable firm that has helped you PLEASE, PLEASE let me know who they are and how I can contact them.
