Hi I'm new here! Also- sticky situation, would love input!

I'm not sure if this is the appropriate place to post this issue, please let me know if it needs to move. <3
Here's the history--
3 years ago I needed major dental work. No cash. I applied and was approved for credit through Unicorn Financial. I was charged about $6000 for the work I got done. I wasn't told how huge the monthy payments would be. Me, being young and naive (I know better now!) didn't ask either.
I struggled through a few payments but ultimately fell behind. Nasty bill collecters called from Unicorn and eventually I told them to go F themselves because of their treatment of me. I quit paying anything at all for probably a year and there was no contact from them. Fees and junk building up all the while.
Jan 2008 - HUGE chunk of the debt shows as charged off on my credit report.
Chase Health Advance aquired Unicorn Financial.
I got some far friendlier calls and I made an agreement to pay $100 per month for the rest of my life (lol, right?!) and I upheld that for quite some time. Earlier in the year, like many, we started struggling very badly financially and I wasn't able to make the $100 payments. I sent a letter of hardship to the company explaining my situation and have been making teeny tiny payments since July in good faith.
I'd really love to settle the debt using my tax return money in February. How do I go about this? Does it matter that the account (oddly) has never been sold to a collection agency? I'd be essentially dealing with the OC since Unicorn is now Chase Health Advance. Do I need to stop making my good faith payments in order to have a chance at settling the debt for less?
This debt is a thorn in my side and the only negative item on my credit report. Ugh!
In case it helps:
Balance - $7503
Charged off- $6094
Past Due - $2574
Any insight on how best to deal with this situation is appreciated! THANK YOU!

I am not sure if stopping the payment is a good idea. If you stop payments suddenly, the creditor then may move to court as next alternative. Better we wait for others to comment of this as well.

Ok... I'm a little put off. I contacted the toll free number and explained my situation. The very nice lady I spoke with says that all I am required to pay is the past due amount of $2564 and that the $6094 that was charged off is just "gone". She then tried to sell me debt consolidation services and advised me that because I currently make monthly payments, I'll need to go delinquent in order to get a good settlement offer.
I didn't realize they were going to try to sell me something. I hope they don't keep calling me now. :(
I don't trust her answer now because I feel like there were ulterior motives at work. Ugh... I need some real answers!
Is the charged off amount really just "gone" like she said? That sounds a bit too friendly to be true.

don't know where they got that from.since it is now with CHASE they will require you to get the past due amount paid, but as far as the charge off amount.i would contact chase about that, and see what they say before proceeding.never heard of a charge off amount just going away unless it was part of an agreement between the two parties.i would e-mail vikas about that.he runs that part of the site as well.
