OK....I messed up here. I'm on a shoestring budget so I ignored a past due medical bill. I couldn't pay in full, which they insisted on, so no payments were made. Now they are suing me.
I don't want a judgement on my credit report so I'm prepared to settle with them & pay up. But what are my options in doing so?
The first court date is set for 1-6. I can pay in full on 1-4 if they will accept a credit card payment, but I'm fairly certain they will say "certified funds only.
I can pay in full by 1-15 no problem, but coming up w/everything before 1-6 would be difficult unless I can use my credit card.
Any suggestions?

Make sure that you file a reply to the summon even when trying to settle outside the court. The creditor would get a default judgement against you if you fail to file your answer within the given time period.

Now, regarding outside the court settlement, check out the following source for help.

Thanks. I looked at the website & I'm still confused. I'm assuming if I pay them in full by 1-6 that the lawsuit goes away. Let's say I'm able to do that - is there still a need to file an answer then or can I safely assume that they will report to the courthouse that the debt has been satisfied?

I do owe this debt & they did not sell it to a collection agency or anything, so I don't think I can talk my way out of it. I do not want a judgement on my credit report at all, so I'll do what ever it takes to avoid that.

Sorry to keep asking questions, but I'm a little nervous about doing this correctly.

My case is in Chicago IL, but I live in the burbs - Do most people file their answer on the day of their court date?

Can I do so & state something to the effect that I owe the debt and want to pay it in full to avoid a judgement against me - then work something out with the lawyers there? Or is it essential that I do whatever it takes to get the debt paid off in full prior to the court date in order to avoid a judgement?

Thanks for any help
