A debt collector called my parent's house and left a message stating that they're filing a lawsuit against me, and recited my full name and last 4 digits of my social security number. Is this legal for them to disclose such information on an answering machine, especially when it's not even me they called?

No they cannot....pure and simple, an 1 of disclosure. Hopefully your parents kept the message. If not, have them write out a statement, get it notorized at the bank and find an consumer attorney thru NACA. Or if you feel confident enough, send the debt collector an "intent to sue" letter, outlining the violation and a copy of the proof. Should be an easy $1000 in your pocket, unless you wanna go for punitive damages for pain and suffering for the embarrassment of the debt being disclosed to your parents.
