Historically for the account, I have been on time -- the stickler is that I was late in returning equipment by over 60 days. This has gone to collections and I'm not sure how to handle this. What is my best move now? The key thing is I need to avoid any affect on my credit rating because I'm looking to qualify for a mortgage in a few months.

I'm thinking of a Debt Validation Request? If it comes down to it and I have to pay them off, then I will -- as long as there's nothing on my credit report.

Now, I'm not sure about timing of it all -- when does it get reported to the credit agencies (if it does at all)?

By the way, I'm pretty sure I'm under 180 days of payment for late equipment -- which I suppose I'm gambling by returning it. Let's say it gets settled with Disk - how do I know they tell collections to stop? I suppose then I'd go with a Debt Validation Request -- except for me, I'm doing it because I really dealt with it, and I'm not trying to stall :)

In this case it went to collections because they assumed you wouldn't return the equipment. Now that you have, contact Dish and ask them for a final balance. You may find there is no balance. Whichever the case, pay the balance if there is one....or once you pay or there is no balance send a letter to the CA that you have taken care of this matter and now have no business relationship with them and you expect not to see anything on your credit report. OR if they already have, inform them that there IS no debt and it had better be removed.

It's not clear to me if this should hit my credit report yet. I've heard that it will if it's moved to collections at all -- but then again, i've heard that it will if it's 180 days?

If it's already on my credit report I could do one of 2 things right?

1) tell the CA to remove it
2) dispute it myself

Should I also somehow get Dish Network to send me something in writing, or maybe I could get a printout from my online account.
