Not really. You did the smart thing. You're right that this sounds like a scam. PS, you can't go to jail for owing money, just in case you didn't know.

If you're living in Maryland and having trouble with those PDL's or people claiming to be collecting on PDls, you might also want to contact the MD Dept. of Financial Regulation in Baltimore (phone # and address listed on this site). And if you HAVE dealt with PDL's in the past and have people calling you like this, please keep a close eye on your bank account in case anyone tries to take money.

I have so stupid in the past!!! This PDL thing was driving me up a wall and I do not handle stress very well. There were a number of scams but I got a handle on it before it got in to me too deep. Mr. Santana, David Walker, Mark Thomas just to name a few are some of the namews thaat were used. All of these people spoke with a heavy Mid-Eastern accent, barely understandable. Beware! Do not be one of thoise who were just plain dumb>

Jumper, it's not being stupid, it's called being human. Most of us here have been in the same boat to one degree or another. Lately it seems that there's been an epidemic of these scam calls; wonder if it's possibly due in part that some areas are cracking down on PDL's and those businesses want to make up their losses by these intimidating phone calls, or what? It's disgusting, they use legal-sounding terminology, official-sounding company names, and try to scare people into sending them money.

There is a website out there about these calls - the guy calls them habba dabbas because they all sound like they are from India. I've tried posting the link but I guess since the source of the information is unverified I can't directly link you to site.
Google the number you got and see if a blog entry on 800notes.com comes up. The person usually posts the link to their website there. They have like 100 numbers that the scammers have used. They all sound the same, make the same threats.
