If these are still now unpaid this may create problem. I think you can try paying down these debts (if at all valid) along with the "Pay for delete" agreement. If you people are not sure about the four accounts in collections then you can send debt validation letters to the collection agencies through certified mail, requesting a return receipt. However, this will need some time.
This whole thing really makes me mad. We don't have the money
This whole thing really makes me mad. We don't have the money right now to clear all the debt...This is what the new job will help us do. Therefore, not allowing someone to work because of his credit is so unfair. It should be discrimination especially since he has a flawless driving record, no criminal record, a sold employment history and great references...So if you fall on bad time and have to prioritize between your mortgage and credit cards you no longer can pass a background check? I guess my next question will be has anyone passed a background check with poor credit and chargeoffs? I would really like to know...
Thanks

Hi Guest,
Can you please tell me in which state you reside? Many US states have recently prohibited employers from hiring/firing employees on the basis of credit history.

I had read that a few states had adopted the new bill. Unfortunately not in the state of South carolina where I live. I can only hope employers will not weigh Credit reports so heavily with this new bill in the process of becoming adopted in all states.

I think the background checks and poor credit scores hurt some professions but not others, for example, if he will be working with money they consider it a poor risk. Like in banking and I think I have heard some real estate professionals on this board say that also. For me--I chose to settle my debts rather than bankruptcy and that was a primary factor. In my field (IT that works with investments) it has kept some people from getting a job. One guy on here also in IT said he does not think it matters so i decided it was the money part of my job not the IT.
Keep us posted and good luck.

Thanks. I was hoping it was just in the Bank, Finance, securities field. This is a position selling medical supplies in an outside sales position. No money will be collected... I just wonder if they pull the report even if you will not be handling money. I have heard it both ways.

That is good news and I would say he has a much better chance whether they pull it or not because nowadays what you are experiencing is much more common than not.
Please let us know the outcome.

If you are worried, maybe he needs to be proactive and just say that he had some issues in the past with credit. Be honest and tell them his story. The good news is it is 3.5 years old, which looks better than something more recent.

I think he is going to ask the Recruiter tomorrow via email what is included in the background check. If she mentions credit check he will answer with the credit issues. Has anyone had a background check that didn't include a credit check?

Typically speaking, a background check only checks for criminal records. You would have to sign a waiver expressly giving them permission to check your credit report. At least that's how it is in TN... I had to sign a FCRA waiver.

Yep had to sign the waiver but it read we MAY check credit, driving, etc..
Never came out and said it was part of the process. I'm pretty sure that it will be checked because it read in the paperwork, Drug test, Driving, and background check. This is the more extensive kind of check..I have to hope my negative credit doesn't do me in.
I think he will be fine. I got a job a year ago, and they check
I think he will be fine. I got a job a year ago, and they checked my credit and I had bankruptcy and so did my husband. I really think they just check for criminal stuff. Take a deep breath. Let us know how everything turns out.
