Can a debt collector threaten you with losing your job? I just received a call from a debt collector and I was trying to find a way to work out a payment arrangement. Keep in mind this is the first time I am talking to these people on my work line no less. Anyway, this rude lady tells me that I have to pay the debt in full now or I could lose my job. Is that even possible?

That's a violation of the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act. They cannot threaten your job. Send a letter in writing to the company documenting the name of the rep and the date/time of the call. Inform them that they are not allowed to call you at work.

IF you sue them for FDCPA violations, you could win a small judgement ($1000) + attorneys fees.

Go buy a recorder that you can hook up to your phone at Radioshack. You need to record this abuse (check your state recording laws though). This is ILLEGAL and is worth $1,000 each time they do it. Record these fraudsters then get an attorney who will gladly sue them with such great evidence.
