Debt Validation

I believe the claim to be fradulent. I do have an account with this CC company, but my account number is different by a few digits.
Midland supposedly authorized an instate legal firm to collect this debt. I wrote them with the above information and recieved the same monthly billing statement which was identified as my "final billing statement" and a bad copy of the CC's dispute of payment policy.
The original CC has never, to my knowledge, contacted me about this account. It was a complete suprise to get these letters from Midland and now the legal firm in Des Moines.
What is my next step? I still see no proof that I defaulted on this account. Is this truly a debt validation?
Thank you!
Tobin
I don't think it is proper validation. Don't pay a penny unless
I don't think it is proper validation. Don't pay a penny unless they can validate the debt properly. If you have not defaulted on the account, then there is no need to pay any money.
You can get all the useful information about debt validation from the following page:

If you really owe the debt, then contact your original creditor and ask him whether he has really sold off the account to the collection agency. It will be much better to work out an alternative repayment plan with your original creditor. Ask him to withdraw the accounts from the collection agency and settle the debts directly with him.
