You can stop them from doing this but you can safeguard yourself. Make sure before you settle you get a settlement offer letter. Then, pay your settlement with a check or bank money order. Payment must match the letter. Once everything is paid, make a copy of the paid check or order a copy of the paid money order (A money order receipt is NOT proof that the debt has been paid.) Staple together and put in a safe place. If the CA sells off your remaining debt, you have concrete proof that you have settled the matter.

Hey soaplady how do you get a copy of money order. When I get them
at walmart they only give you a reciept. What did you mean by proof
of payment, is that sending payment CMRR or is their something different. I was also wondering what do you do if they credit the settlement payment as just a regular payment and keep calling you for
more money. Can you resend settlement letter informing them "paid in
