I think you are being scammed. The entire thing seems to be fishy. Did you sign any contract with them? Don't make any further payment to them. You can get some information on them from the following url:

If this was their first contact with you, they were required, under FDCPA 809(a), to have sent you a formal, written collection ("dunning") notice within 5-days thereafter, advising you of your rights and how to request debt validation under FDCPA 809(b). If you never received dunning notice from them, that is a sure sign that they are not operating under the FDCPA.
If you have an address for them, I would immediately send them a written DV letter, forcing them to cease collection until they have provided you debt validation under FDCPA 809(b). As part of that process, they are legally required to contact the OC and provide you verification that the OC affirms the debt, and its amount. That puts scammers on the spot. If they provide validation without following the requirements of FDCPA 809(b), they are digging a hole.
I would also suggest you contact your state bar administration regarding the status if any party representing attorney status. They are the source of that information, as well as possible sanctions against this party.
