The storefront Ace Cash Express I am not so worried about after reading California Laws in this very informative and excellent thread. Much appreciated and thank you for all of your hard work.

The one that irks me the most is Cash Central. The first call I got from them was a threat. Claiming to be the Law offices of Thomas and Williams LLC. Of course in searching for this law office there is no information to be found. I had taken out a $255 pdl, medical conditions ate up every penny I had and I was in no condition to even worry about anything else but my life. I have finally recovered and am back in the workforce. I have every intention to pay all of my loans but this threatening call from people claiming to be investigators and charging me with check fraud got me a worried. First I spoke with a woman and when I asked how much I owed she passed me along to a stern voiced male who said I owed well over $800 dollars and when I asked for a letter showing me what I owed with their address on company letterhead, he said it's on its way first thing in the morning but of course it has been 3 weeks and nothing. What options do I have at this point. They will not stop calling me.

Though payday loans are legal in California, I will suggest you to contact the California Department of Corporations in order to find out whether or not Cash Central is licensed to operate in your state. If you find that they are not licensed, then you will be liable for paying only the principal balance and nothing else. As far as the collection agency is concerned, ask them to validate the debt. Ask them not to contact you unless they provide you with validation of debt. Also, let them know that if they can't validate the debt, then you're not responsible for paying them a dime. Send them a 1 if they are unable to validate the debt.

I have checked with the Department of Corporations and they are licensed in California.

I have requested a validation of debt letter, of course they said they would send it but still nothing this whole week.

I received a call again from them but from a different rep. He left a message and says they are Thomas and Wilson, the last 2 times they called they were Thomas and Williams, it appears they cannot keep their own story straight. This time instead of specifically stating they will prosecute me for check fraud he says he is an investigator and will forward my file for further action. My situation kills me because I have paid a debt collector in 2008 who claimed to be cash central and the calls stopped for years now it is 2011 and I get calls from people claiming to be them again, this is ridiculous.

I have filed a complaint with Ca. Dept of Corps.

Any other suggestions?

Thanks.

I have been searching for an address for Thomas & Williams myself as they have been frequently calling me at work and my cell phone. I have not taken any of the calls.

They were just licensed in GA in June, 2011. http://comdev.cobbcountyga.gov/new-business/download/bl-2011-06-03.pdf

Here's the address info I found:
Thomas & Williams, LLC
1820 Water Pl Ste 195
Atlanta GA 30339

I hope this helps!
