At the end of the conversation the woman said 35 percent would be absolute lowest they would go -- I keep offering 20 percent --

Well... I don't have any personal experience in settling the debts with Old Navy. However, I think settling the debts for 35% is definitely a very good option. If they offer you 35%, then I think you should go for it and settle your debts.

Chrissy, Calling relatives and neighbors is for location purpose
Chrissy,
Calling relatives and neighbors is for location purposes. They already knew where you were and how to reach you. Placing a call to family could not have been for a permissible purpose given what you outline in your post.
Do a search for FDCPA attorney+Suffolk (or use other narrow identifiers like your zip code etc.
Speak with an attorney experienced in filing FDCPA violation claims. The vast majority of FDCPA attorneys take cases on contingency. Their legal fees are generally paid by the collector violating your rights.
It will cost you nothing to talk with an attorney practicing in this area of law. You will likely appreciate the experience. It will cost you nothing to have them pursue the case.
Best of Success!
thanks for your post
thank you for your post! it was really strange -- I mean she's in a completely different area code and I've been in touch with them monthly if not bi-weekly --
she was really worked up and thought something had happened to me --
I appreciate the advice and I will look into it --
