Discover card offered my a 40% settlement on a $2500 debt. My overall credit is in poor condition. I am trying to turn it around now. I'm in New Orleans and need to buy another family home. Discover will report a settled less than full balance to the bureau. Should I take the 40% offer or pay $2000 for a paid in full report to the bureau ???

Thanks

Hi Brian

Your foremost concern should be to pay off this debt at the earliest. Since you are interested in buying a new home, the lenders will be interested to see good credit history. An unpaid account can be a negative mark in your file and will deprive you from better deals.

At the first priority, prefer to have the 'paid in full' status reported in your credit file. If you can't afford that much money, take the discount offer. Ensure that your credit file is updated after the account has been paid off.

Thank you Gretchin! I really appreciate your information, both today and last week!!

Is the "paid in full" worth $900 dollars more considering the overall credit report is in poor to fair condition?
