Wow! these guys really come with all the guns!
I just got a phone call from them, for an online payday loan from 2002. they're trying to collect it now... it was for $390 and they want me to give $1,300 and are threating to report me or take legal action because I wrote bad checks. I want to call them back today, I googled the name and found this site, I guess I am not the only one... Can someone advise on what kind of actions I should take? I'll pay what I think I owe, but what records do they have that I never paid the debt? I obviously have no record. I will pay $390, but not a penny more... Anyone with advice on how to settle for that amount?
HELP!!!

Geneva Roth must validate the debt in writing before you send them any money. By law, the CA must identify themselves legally on behalf of the payday loan company for which they are collecting. There must be copies to prove that the lending company has authorized this CA to attempt further collections. The CA also needs to be licensed in your state before collecting the debt. Check with your local AG's office for their licensing info. I searched in the forum and found this thread discussing about Geneva Roth

Good luck with obtaining validation from them. I had some issues similar to yours and I complained to the BBB and attorney general in the state of Utah. The situation was settled through a mediator of their office. It turns out that Geneva Roth is not a collection agency at all, they were my original creditor and they have no obligation to validate the debt. However, this situation occurred at the end of 2005 and has since been resolved (they waived some fees and I settled with them over a 2 month period of time), so things may have changed since then but that is how I was able to work it out with them.

PS, maybe you could call them and ask to speak with someone else.
