I was reading through some of the old posts here, and someone said that banks can go through a system where they can retrieve your new info. Does anyone know anything about this?

You might be thinking of ChexSystems used by most banks before they will open an account for you. For instance I banked with BofA for years. When I ran into PDL trouble I closed my account and switched banks. If BofA did a chexsystem report on me they would be able to see that I went to a new bank because an inquiry from that new bank would appear on my chexsystem report but I do not believe they would be able to gain access to my new account number.

I bank with BofA and in their computer system, they have a tab labled "NON BofA Accounts", in this tab, they have account numbers and bank names of other checking, savings, credit card, and other banking accounts. I believe that Wells Fargo, Wachovia, and USBank have a similar menu.
