I contacted my local college about taking some online courses. They told me I needed to take a placement test but they'd have to call back because there is a hold on my account from 1997. So they explained that I owed 193.60 from 1997 (I went there in 1992 and paid all fees up front). They said the amount was in collections until the staue of limitations passed the it was kicked back to the college where they won't allow me to return without paying the debt. Allthough I do not owe this ..can they still hold this over me as a charge. They said my account had been purged since it has been almost 15 years since I was there and 13 since they tacked on a charge. I thought the limit was seven years. Can you please explain this? Thank you.

mrsfhen2001,
The Staute of Limitations only prevents legal actions, they cannot sue you for the debt after so long a period of time depending on what state you are in. BUT, until the matter is resolved, they can say you owe them a debt for any length of time. They can even report it on your credit statement indefinately. Do a debt validation letter, this forces them to look over their records and perhaps catch a mistake or at least explain the debt. Make sure you send it certified mail. This should give you some enlightenment and set you on a path to resolution. I hope you get this worked out, I love stories about people that went back to school with happy endings!
