Hi, I know it sounds like a very odd subject title, but my dad is not doing well and now he gets a letter telling him he owns money to a company, even though he is sure he doesnt. The letter doesn't especify a date or anything like that.

I'm only 15 years old, since his English is very limited, I'm trying to do the best I can to help.

The letter is from the First National Collection Bureau, Inc. An it says that the company MCI is making a 'reasonable settlement on your account' it says that he would only have to pay 50% of the original amount he 'supposely owes.' We already called MCI Communication Services and they said that my dad doesn't owe any money, when we told them about the 50% offer they were surprised, and basically just said that he doesn't have to pay anything.

However, we're not sure if we should leave things just like that, should we still contact the First National Collection Bueau? is it just a ripoff? The letter says my dad has 21 days to send the money or they'll revoke the amount to its entirely.

Thanks in advance, I was just very happy to see a blog like this with people that are willing to help.

The fdcpa laws are available to every consumer and you can use it for your protection against collectors doing illegal or unfair practices. Get the debt validated by FNCB. They need to show the account with full information and ensure that their collection is genuine. Send the DV letter and keep a copy documented in your folder. This will be needed if you wish to pursue legal actions. You can also write a complete C&D letter if you are sure that the debt is invalid.

Hi Carlinhos.

Welcome to the site!

I think you're awesome to help your dad like this. First thing you need to do is send a "debt validation letter". This goes to the collection agency. Basically, what you are doing is asking them for proof of the debt. They have 30 days to respond. When you mail it, make sure you mail it registered, with the receipt returned to you. This way you'll know they get it.

For a sample debt validation letter, look to your left and click on the do it yourself link. This will have all the info you need.

Good luck sweetie, and let us know if you need help..we're here for you, don't be afraid to ask any questions.
