They can't garnish your salary without taking you to court first. Send them a certified letter requesting validation of the debt and a statement of what was paid against what the original balance was. What is the name of the collection agency and what state do you live in?
Dealing with Creditors and Collection Agencies
This is Rubin and Rothman, LLC. When I pulled them up on the net today to see the phone number, I saw instead tons of complaints about how horrible they are. Thank you very much for your advice. I am so upset right now I can't begin to express myself as clearly as I would like.

The document my employer received was a subpoena for information regarding my employment which came in regular mail and I'm not sure it is a real subpoena. Again, I did not receive any information from this credit company myself in over a year now, and I have not moved or changed address in any way since I did have contact with them on a regular basis several years ago.
My employer is wondering if they are required to respond to this and how should they proceed

I was reading about them and it is still unclear to me if they are a law firm or a collection agency. Whatever, they are ruthless and illl mannered and will stop at nothing. My advice to you is to get an attorney if you can possibly afford one. It is better to pay your attorney then to pay there legal fees on top otf the amount owed. I know this is not what you would like hear but looking at their history an attorney would be your safe guard. They would probably run and hide if you even referred them to one. They work on intimidation!

The best way to determine if the subpoena is real or not is to see what judge/magistrate signed it and check to see if the person is real. If the person is real then you can check with that judge/magistrate to determine if they indeed signed off on it.

Frog, you are my angel today that's for sure ! I've been reading and I'm a little more together than when I first posted. Your information has been very helpful. I am going to call the local LRS attourney as soon as I leave work here today. I found a letter on the net that is useful to inquire about the balance and the status of my account. I've also considered that if they are doing this, they might try and freeze my bank accounts so I am informing them in advance that they cannot do so because I receive Social Security survivor benefits on behalf of my son after the death of my husband on that account. I don't think I would qualify for a Legal Aid attourney but I have inquired in case that somehow I'm mistaken.
In the middle of all this I'm trying to actually work and 'be normal'.
Thank you again, and thanks to everyone who has kept this board working for those of us who are clueless on these things.
