I received a call from them saying I owed money to JCPenneys from 16 years again and I said I can't honestly say I have had a card for that long. She then told me that she had no idea why it was flying under the radar that long but that they are collecting it. They would kindly knock off 15% if I paid the amount up front to them. I said I would like proof of this and she said she could not give me any. I then told her I would look into it and call back. Then I called back the company, I spoke with an employee named Jeff was very rude and unprofessional. I was trying to explain the situation to him when he went off on me very rudely and saying what are you trying to do get off on a technicality such as the statue of limitation being way past. I told him that the lady who I was speaking with before told me the account was sixteen years past due and could not give me anymore information on the account. When I asked her to tell me what I supposedly purchase and the dates she said she did not have any information on it and I told her I was not going to pay any money to them if they could not prove to me that it was me or give me some information. Jeff told me that she did not know what she was talking about and I told him maybe the employees need to know their shit before you call people and tell them they owe money. I said it is not my fault and I asked to speak to his supervisor and he said ???????No you are not going to speak to a supervisor on this???????. He then tells me don????????t worry we are on recorded lines and I have you saying everything and I have noted your file saying that I was not going to pay $190.00 and proceeded to hang up on me. So I called right back and got a lady and told her that I would like to speak to a supervisor who works with Jeff, she transfers me to Jeff who very rudely tells me again ???????we are not accepting your calls and hangs up on me???????.
This company is very rude and unprofessional. Beware !!!!!!

Wyatt's obtuseness
Well Wyatt, chew on this. Your company has been incessently calling my private residence with regard to a debt of my husband's estranged brother. He has NEVER lived at our home! After speaking with an obvious under educated individual named "Stuart", he advised me that I would continue to receive harrassing calls if I didn't comply with either furnishing him info on the estranged brother or paying his debt. Pursuant to our state's statues for debt collection, in addition to the Fair Debt Collection Procedure Act passed by Congress, NO, you can not continue to call my residence for a debt that is unrelated to me, in addition to solicit payment for a debt that was not incurred by myself, is illegal. That can be derived as racketeering. Your Mr. Stuart asked me if I was an attorney since I am well advised of my rights, I suppose. When I informed him that I was not, he said that I shouldn't quote the law then. Hmm. Well here is what I am, a law student who clerks for a firm with a stellar reputation. As the well respected citizen that I am and armed with the exceptional education that I have, CPC has had in the last 2 hours, 5 complaints filed on my behalf with FTC, both the Minn Attny Gen Office and the OK AG's office, the FCC for telephone communication harrassment, intrastate and the BBB. In addition, if your office ignores the Cease and Desist order that I am sending them, they will be in violation of FEDERAL LAW. That federal statue states that " once a party is advise to cease their clear actions of unwarranted harrassment, they can not under any circumstances, circumvented by law contact the party who filed the writ to cease." If your company does, hopefully they have deep pockets because I will pursue my legal right for damages. Furthermore, Wyatt made statements to the effect that "we are all lying". Your company, it's employees and representatives are the parties that have issues with the truth. My case in point, I have never had any business with CPC and can not in any way, shape, form, spin, whatever it is that CPC wants to call it, justify calling an innocent individual as my self to settle some debt you have with some one else. CPC uses tactics that are threaded with dishonesty. And anyone who works there should be ashamed of themselves for treating well respected and high valued citizens such as myself, in the fashion in which you do. Oh and by the way Wyatt, why don't you find Mr. Stuart and tell him that ANYONE can QUOTE anything, having a law license doesn't prevent an individual for being educated about their rights. Hmm, sounds like I might also contact the ACLU, for in fact you are violating my civil liberties as a law abiding citizen! Have fun working for CPC while you can......

Someone called from 952-944-1620 by the name of Eric Hardy he said it was a law office. They called my work. The lady at work who took the call said he was a real jerk. When I got home today I called the number to find out what it was about and the lady who answered did not ask my name but put me on hold for over 50 minutes so I just hung up. I know I owe debts but I do not know who they are collecting for.

I got a call from them today. i didn't answer initially, until I did a search for the number (800-815-2079) and it didn't come up with anything so i called it back. A guy answered and I said that I am calling back the number. He said that he is looking for a Jeffrey. Since my name is Erik, I told him that he had the wrong number. he replied with a snotty "Oh really". I told him yeah, rly.
Since this was the third company looking for this Jeffrey guy and my number is a business line number that I just got 2 months ago I called back and asked him what his company was. I asked if he was a debt collector and he said yeah (with a better tone than before). I asked him where he got the number since I am tired of companies calling my business line looking for this guy. He said that he got it from Experian. This had to been an older record if they have it by now and the phone number must have been cycled around and now i have it. Needless to say, I have been trying to call Experian to tell them that it is the wrong number but I can't get past their stupid annoying menu system.
cpc dont know who they are calling
We just started getting the calls yesterday.first of all they have a recorded voice telling you to hold. If you are really trying to reach someone then it should be a person asking. he ask for my husband. I ask who was calling he started getting smart and telling me he didnt have time to play games. I told him to answer my question since I had answered his. He continued to to talk tough, not bothering me one bit. He said he will call everyday. I finally told him you know what and hung up on him..He called again today I picked up and hung up right away. He called back and left a message saying call John @ CPC.Later this evening he called and my husband answered and spoke with John. He told my husband that he was calling in regards to our American express cards with a balance of $2700. We do not and have never had a AE card. He didn"t check to see if he had the right person or not. My husbands name is a very common name. Also we pay our bills always.. I did collection for 9 yrs and never heard of collectors acting the way I have read on here. I guess we will get another call tomorrow maybe I will answer maybe not. My husband did not get a chance to tell him we have never had a AE card and we are positive that the personal info they have do not match ours.

validate!
What is remarkable about all of these postings is the lack of information on the part of CPC regarding the specifics of any debts they are purporting to collect. It sounds almost like they are fishing, rather than collecting legitimate debts.
Any firm that refuse to validate or specify the source of a debt should be viewed as highly suspect. FDCPA requires that written notice of the debt must be sent to you within five days of initial contact. If they do not supply written notice or validation upon request, they are in violation of FDCPA.
I cannot think of any state that would allow collection of a 16-year-old credit card debt.
There's nothing illegal about attempting to collect on an unpaid
There's nothing illegal about attempting to collect on an unpaid debt. Unless you live in WI or MS, an unpaid debt remains collectible until the sun goes super-nova or the consumer dies, they have zero leverage though since they can't legally report or sue.
Idiots
These idiot junk debt buyers always do this. They basically yell, scream, insult, intimidate, threaten, whatever they want to try to get people to pay debts that are well beyond the SOL and cost the a penny or two on the dollar.
Debtor or not, no one has to put up with harassing calls like this. Contact your State AG's office, the FTC, the BBB, and if they actually threaten you, call your local police department and report it. When one of them gets arrested for telling you they "will eat your babies" or something stupid like that, the others will stop and think about their actions.
The issue is that these morons work for fly-by-night outfits that once the FTC or an AG's office starts investigating, the firm "closes" and dissolves the corporation then "reopens" and incorporates under a new name and Tax ID number. However, it's still the same clowns. Enforcement fails because it's difficult to pierce the corporate veil and go after these schmucks personally.
If they call you regularly, start recording the conversations. Tell them in a recorded call to stop calling. Then send them written notification to stop calling as well. Keep records, and research the FDCPA. If they violate (and it sounds like these clowns will), and you've got proof (a recording), sue them in your local small claims court for the statutory $1000 per violation. Most likely, these clowns wouldn't even show up for the hearing, leaving you with a default judgment in your favor. Then it's just a matter of finding assets of theirs in your state, or getting the judgment transcribed to theirs and collecting there.
If they threaten you on tape, it would be hard for a police agency or local prosecutor not to charge them.
Bottom line - know your rights and fight back.
What I find the most hilarious is that I work as a tax collector for a state government. We treat people with dignity and respect, and we don't have to abide by the rules they do - were the OC, not a JDB, and we are a government agency so we are exempt from most of the laws JDB and collection attorneys need to abide by. But if ANYONE in my office acted like this, they'd be fired in a heartbeat. And people hate the taxman?? We're saints compared to these clowns...
Know your rights people... And USE THEM!

okay.. so to you Mr. Wyatt.. I had this guy call me saying that he can strike me a deal with a past credit card debt that I haven't even seen in like a year. Im at no point to argue. I'm all down for the help and am willing to take care of any debt that I have incurred upon. We make plans, but I want the condition that I have the paper work from the company saying that the deal is legit.. it's been nearly two weeks.. NO DICE! Can you explain that?

wyatt you are a piece of trash and i hope you lose your license when you get sued. !000$ fine for each violation of the fdcpa. All you people having trouble with these trash need to file a complaint with the FTC. federal trade commission. The law is the fair debt collections practices act. FDCPA record the calls if its legal in your state and keep records. By law they can only call 1x a day unless you give them permission to call back. If you tell them that you don't owe this debt it has to be in writing. send it registered. If they keep calling sue them and they will lose their license.
???
Tks for all the good info to every one! these info just opened my eyes and I feel I should stop payments to these fools I don't know nothing about. As of now I am cancelling my credit card that they been using to take payments. I am just one more victim of stupidity.

consumers have rights under FTC. This company violates those rights. I have made a complaint with the FTC and recommend every one read the fair dept collection practices act to know there rights. see this video from the FTC for more information. http://ftc.gov/multimedia/video/credit/debt/debt-collection_eileen.shtm
Laws are out there but most people don't know about them. Arm yourself with the law and put this company and others like them behind you like a bad dream.. Additionally you can fire dept collectors as you are under no legal act to deal with them. Also under the FDCPA there is a time frame in which anyone can collect a past dept, if you owe a dept be sure to check it's expire date. all this is in the FDCPA. Lastly I will tell you that no dept collector can threaten you. If they do, or if they refuse any partial payment, you are no longer obligated to pay the dept. This is the Law, not my opinion. Not to mention you can now sue and as long as you have proof, you will win.
I like recording my phone calls but be careful and check your state laws. Here in Texas so long as one party to the recording knows its recorded, your legal and do not have to tell the dept collector. On the other hand if you want them to hang up faster than you can... Tell them you are recording the call..

My daughter hasn't lived here for 20 years but apparently used my phone # for a credit ref or maybe it was here ex-husband. Anyway CPC kept calling. I never gave them any info. The calls kept coming.
So I bought a new phone with an answering system and set the phone to answer immediately. Now when they call, their call is answered by the recorded message which most of the time is a hangup.
Not much of a problem to me and the consolation is that each call they make costs them twenty cents or more. So not only will they never get paid on whatever they think my daughter owes them. They are spending a couple bucks or more each week trying to catch the balloon. Keep it up fellas I'm enjoying every bit of it.

No sense in calling the same number over and over with the same response, see the definition of insanity. But anyways, I read a blog posting of this woman (Cherrie, on this website, search: 'central portfolio control' to find her post) claiming we kept calling for her ex-husband who she claims has never even BEEN to her house/doesn't live there... I searched the file in our database (she listed her husbands name so it was easy to pull it up) and in fact WE had called her home number (which she provided IN the blog post) and SPOKE to her "ex" husband on February 12th at that number... and she thought she could blog and lie about it - my point exactly about the lying debtors (she wasn't even the debtor, but you get the idea, 95% of the poeple we talk to LIE)her husband stated he filed a chapter 13 bankruptsy... was going out of town for a while, would take care of it upon his return... So, in conclusion, it's too bad that most collectors ( as Central Portfolio Control)are a$$holes, but I'm sure you can figure out a way to mess with them... On my own behalf, I prefer actually helping people pay off there debts legitimately by settin gup payment plans, I know most debtors don't have much EXTRA cash to throw at some debt they really don't care about anyways. ~Wyatt |
Congrats sir. You have won the award for douchebag of the year. You officially are a piece of shit. I hold people like you with less respect then even meter maids. That's right, janitors are royalty compared to you. Also, the definition of insanity is not actually doing the same thing over and over expecting different results. That's just something people like me have to teach wastes you wastes of space in jails, treatment centers, halfway houses, pedophile houses.... I'm not sure which one you are, but I'm glad to hear a bunch of drug addict misfits are responsible for handling other peoples money. I'm just hoping your not the last of the options I listed. Last thing we can handle is you raping not only our children but also our pocketbooks.

CPC Reps are the rudest, nastiest group of people. They threaten to get you fired, they threaten to call your boss, and constantly, constantly call your job!!! I am so frustrated with them that I cry every night. Obviosuly if I had the money I would pay it!
My husband left me with this loan and I have no way to pay it and these people wont even accept a payment plan.
The individual Wyatt who responded that he works for CPC is a prime example of the type of people that work there.

I rec a phone call on my cell phone today from CPC wanting to collect on a debt from 2/2008. He was very nice and explained my options of paying in full or they would sue. He said that in AR this would stay on my credit report for 10 yrs and they could get the money if I sold or refi my home or if I went to work for a company(I'm self employed) they could garnish my wages. I don't know how he got my cell phone number. He called my Xspouse (over 20 yrs divorced) who doesn't know how to reach me. He knew my daughter's married name. So I'm puzzled how he found out all this information...Kindda scary. I told him I wanted to research his company and make sure he is legitimate. I do owe a debt from over 2 yrs ago when I was out of work but do not have the money to pay in full. He had a copy of my credit report and knew how much I owed on my home. Please advise me on how to handle this situation. He asked me to call him back tomorrow with an offer to pay after I researched CPC online. Thanks for any help.
Has he sent you anything in the mail? If not, call him back and
Has he sent you anything in the mail? If not, call him back and tell him he has 5 days to send you a dunning letter. Do not speak to him further, simply tell him you await the letter for the details of the debt as required by law.
Also check to see if this debt is listed on your credit report and who put it there.
Once you get the letter you send a debt validation letter back to them certified mail return receipt. In this letter you ask for proof the debt is yours and proof they are legally entitled to collect upon it. You will need to see an agreement/contract signed by you, the last statement that shows the final balance owed, a notice they are authorized to collect if they are collecting on behalf of someone else, or a bill of sale if they own the debt now.
Once they get that letter and if they are reporting to the credit report, you dispute the account with the reporting agencies. If the company verifies, they have violated your rights. They also may not continue to collect upon the debt until they validate the account.
If they call you, simply tell them you await validation as is your right. Don't let them talk at all, tell them that then hang up.
If they sue you while under a DV that is also considered continued collection activity and a further violation.
If they do send you the proper documentation, then you can send them a letter proposing a payment arrangement you can easily handle. If they turn it down, keep sending the offer ever couple months, certified mail. If they sue you, you can show these attempts to the judge.

Yes I have. They took over an account I had with HSBC that went into collections while I was hospitalized for two months. Anyway Central portfolio is a nightmare. They have no boundries. If you are lucky they will yell at you, curse you, and even tell you they are not the ones in bebt you are and then threaten you with garnish wages wich they are too lazy to ever do. Just a scare tactic! Good luck and get a bible, you will need it when dealing with these devils!

The FDCPA and maybe even the laws in your state are there to protect you from illegal harassment. The best evidence of illegal harassment is a recording of the phone call. Record the calls if legal in your state because debt collectors will always lie and never admit to saying something that will get them in trouble. Then contact a consumer lawyer to help you sue the debt collection company and the collector.

What you all need to do is get a hint that people work hard for their money and all you're trying to do is to trick people into giving you money they don't owe in the first place.

These people have been calling my parents in regards to a debt that I owe. I've asked them before to not call them regarding something they have NO ties to, nor do I live there.
I called back today to find out what was going on, and was actually very nice about it as I've read everyones responses here and was anticipating an attitude from someone over there.

I said that wasn't possible as my parents received a phone call a few months back from the same company. He asked if I was calling him a liar to which I replied "Not at all, but I'm letting you know they've received a phone call before from the same company, so I can only assume they've had it for a longer amount of time".
He got increasingly rude, and then I explained I'd been out of work for over a year in a state with the highest unemployment rate, and then he said to "start paying my bills" - and I then said "You can't squeeze blood from a turnip, and I'm doing the best I can financially". He then said "You're not a turnip, you're a human being" (I wanted to tell him to start treating me like one, but I think that would have just escalated the situation...). I told him again that I didn't want my parents harrassed over a debt they have NO ties to, and in a sarcastic tone replied "Okay...."
I then said to have a lovely day and hung up the phone.
Thanks to whoeever posted the information regarding their address. I'll be sending a Cease and Desist off in the next few days.

Yes CPC is a CREDIT PROCESSING CENTER for shop nbc... when your accounts have been sitting for over 30 days unpaid and the item has been received shop nbc sends the account to there CREDIT PROCESSING CENTER... These people basically give you a chance to pay your payment with out it going into collections. CPC is a legal credit place they are located in Eden Prairie. They have a big office there! (not open to the public because of safety reasons, they can't have any intercepting lines of any kind in there for the fact that they do deal with so many credit cards and bank account numbers) I know all of this because I went to court with them and I have to say They know what they are doing. They are legal and they are willing to work with you. I was able to pay a few payment with JUST ONE of the individuals. All you have to do is ask them if you can have just one person deal with your account. They will be more then happy to do that. Really they saved my credit!!! GREAT PLACE!!!

I understand that debt collectors have a job to do. I also understand that people have rights in regard to their privacy in their homes, and not being called at home, if they so desire. Once the collection agency receives notice that they are not to call anymore, that's it...Don't call anymore. Written correspondence is acceptable after this point. I am in the process of filing a law suit because of these persistent phone calls, after being given notice. It is also B/S that a debtor won't work out a settlement. CPC maintains that their client won't agree to a lesser amount. That's because the more that is collected, the more the CA gets. People have rights, and don't get bail-outs that some of these big companies do.

CPC or anyone else calls you looking to collect on a debt, asked them first when they sent you a letter requesting the debt amount be collected. They usually make up a date, unless you actually received something from them.
Next ask them the collection company name and address.
Next ask for the person name to whom you are speaking.
Next send them a letter requesting validation of the debt.
Include the following;
* Proof that the collection company owns the debt/or has been assigned the debt. (Are they legally entitled to collect this particular debt from you.) What direct contract between collection agency and the original creditor.
* At a minimum, some account statements from the original creditor. If you really want to get sticky, you can pin them down on the amount of the debt by requiring complete payment history, starting with the original creditor. (How is it calculated this debt? What fees/interest has tacked on to this debt and how they determined these fees?) This requirement was established by the case Fields v. Wilber Law Firm, Donald L. Wilber and Kenneth Wilber, USCA-02-C-0072, 7th Circuit Court, Sept 2004..
* Copy of the original signed loan agreement or credit card application. (Your contract with creditor establishing the debt between you.) However, account statements from the original can fulfill these requirements.
Per the FDCPA
If a creditor can't validate a debt:
* They are not allowed to collect the debt,
* They are not allowed to contact you about the debt.
* They are also not allowed to report it under the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA). Doing so is a violation of the FCRA, and the FCRA states that you can sue for $1,000 in damages for any violation of the Act.

I worked there for a long time, this place is not regulated by any shape or form. They get a law suit, settle it out of court and just keep violating. I honestly believe if enough people sued them over the daily laws that are broken they just might learn a lesson that the FDCPA is in place for a reason. There is a way to collect. This economy is destroying alot of families and quite honestly, are you going to pay someone who is threatening you? Or are you going to pay someone that has a little compassion for your situation and work with you? I believe the latter.

CPC (Mark) called my husband work today. The receptionist said he was on break. He then called back and screaming saying someone hung up on him. The receptionist transferred him to the boss. He told the boss he wanted whoever hung up on him fired and he was going to sue the company. I called back and said I was my husband. I of course yelled at him and asked him who he thought he was. He said he never said that to the boss. I told him they tape recorded him and so was I. He wouldn’t believe and wanted my social security number. I obviously would not give it to him. He would not tell me what “debt” he was calling for. We did have one that we had a dispute with so it could have been that one. I told him to send me something in writing and we would take care of it. He kept hanging up on me so I kept calling him back and back. I told him I should have his job because I would be good at it! The number to him is 1 (800) 815-1856. I am sending him a certified letter with return receipt. Goggle dispute letter.
