I have some debt which was racked up due to medical issues. It is in the 10-11k range on unsecured cards, I have been with NovaDebt credit counseling since March and, I couldn't be happier with them. In fact, my credit score has gone up 51 points since I began making payments through them.

Anyways, HSBC happened to "misplace" a payment Novedebt sent to them thus, taking me out of the debt management program. I received a letter and a phone call the day after (Tuesday and Wednesday of last week). I was rid of them and had my HSBC account back in the debt management program within 72 hours here is how....

The phone call was from a "Bob Jordan" who tried to get me to settle immediately or he said they would launch an investigation into me to see what my assets were. I told him this was fine, as I am a Law student and knwo exactly what they can and cannot do. I also told him I was with a Credit Counseling Agency AND that the law states that any collection agency is to contact my counseling service and not me. I hung up with him.
Then..... He had refused to give me their fax #, so I called my state's Attorney General's Office and got it. I immediately typed a cease and desist letter and listed the FTC statutes and other laws he had broken, also telling them that any further calls would be taped and sent to the FTC. I CC'd the fax to the FTC's Wahsington office, my State Attorney General, and the Arizona Attorney general's office (their home state). I PLAINLY listed these numbers on the cover sheet. I also sent in screen shots of the online complaint I filed with the FTC (just in case they thought I was joking ha!. I sent C&D letters Snail mail with receipt verification, I sent e-mails to 15 of their corporate e-mail addresses with return receipts requested, I CC'd these e-mails to the aformentioned Attorney General's Offices the FTC, and my state Senator;s offices.
Three hours later after talking to my credit counseling service and the above-mentioned actions. I received a call from HSBC's corporate offices saying tey had pulled the debt back through to their company and that they apologized for any inconvenience.
I received a call from the FTC on Friday stating that they are going to investigate.

I just wanted to let everyone know how I was able to combat a corrupt collection agency. I've enjoyed reading the discussions here!

Congrats to u!!
We, also, used Nova Debt a few years ago and luckily never had a problem with them. Also after a very short time with them our credit was almost back to normal (which we didn't realize when we went into this, thought it would be messed up for at least 7 years) but luckily our scores kept increasing as we paid monthly!
Again Congrats!
