Very old utility bill

I'm not sure where to post this so here goes.
I recently had the natural gas turned on in a building that I own, it had been off for 7-8 years. When I called to have it turned on I was told I needed to make a $170. deposit, no problem, made the deposit. A couple weeks later I get a bill for $170. I called and questioned the bill thinking that it was odd that they ask for $170 upfront and my first bill was $170 without reading the meter.
The customer service rep told me the first $170 was applied to an old, 7-8 years old, past due balance. Then she told me that that was not right because they were not allowed to try and collect old accounts because a new company bought out the old gas company. If anything is due it is due to the old company. She told me to ignore that bill.
Today I get a new bill with a disconnect notice. The bill is over $600. more then $400. is what they say is due from 7-8 years ago. If not paid by Dec 27th it will be shut off.
I can pay it, BUT I want to be sure that I actually owe it. I do not recall having a past due account with the gas company and I have never received anything in the mail or any phone calls. I do not want to pay it if I do not owe it.
If I do owe it, it is owed to the previous company or a collection agency. I do not want to pay it to the new company and eventually get hit by another place claiming I owe them.
I did the free annual credit report today and nothing is mentioned about owing a gas company. Actually I only have one little medical bill on my report.
How do I find out if I actually owe this money or not?
Also, on the free annual credit report I was only able to get one of the three companies to give me a report. How do I go about getting one from the other two?
Thanks!
